We hosted the party right at home and mixed lots of fun DIYs with some great purchased pieces.

Party Decor
Creating a magical Middle-earth vibe was one of the most fun parts of this party! We wanted our guests to feel like they were stepping right into the Shire—or maybe even Rivendell—when they walked through the door.
Here’s how we brought the Lord of the Rings theme to life with our party decor:
A golden balloon garland with soft pops of green greeted guests at the front door, giving a nod to the elegance of Elven halls and the richness of the One Ring.

We hung the Flag of Rohan on our front porch as a bold statement piece—perfect for any fellow riders of the Mark! 🐎

We couldn’t resist adding a little Tolkien humor right at the entrance! We hung a sign on the front door that read “No Admittance Except on Party Business”—a perfect nod to Bilbo’s iconic front gate and the perfect way to set the tone as guests arrived.
Inside, we strung a custom printed banner with the birthday boy’s name across the kitchen island. We used a classic LOTR-style font and added strands of ivory leaves for an earthy, woodland feel.

From the ceiling, we hung gold, brown, and green bunting as well as gold and green streamers to bring in cozy Shire-inspired tones. It added such a fun layer of whimsy and warmth!
One of my favorite touches was an Etsy banner that read “One Birthday to Rule Them All.” Underneath, we displayed a photo banner featuring sweet snapshots of Teddy from months 1 to 12—cue the tears! 🥲

And the true showstopper? A misty mountain tapestry that looked like it was pulled straight from the films.
It made the perfect backdrop for party pics and the cake smash, and added such a vibe to the whole space.

The end result felt magical, cozy, and adventurous—just like Middle-earth should feel! ✨
LOTR Party Food
Okay, I have to be honest—this might have been my favorite part of the whole party. 😄 We went all in on naming our snacks with LOTR flair, printing out labels using Frodo-style handwriting for that extra magical touch.
Coming up with clever food names was so much fun, it almost overshadowed the decor!
First of all, we displayed the cutest “Now Serving: Second Breakfast” wood sign from Etsy. It was such a charming way to transition from the decor into our Hobbit-worthy spread—and yes, we fully embraced the idea of multiple meals throughout the day. ๐

Here’s a peek at what was on our Middle-earth menu:
- Frodo’s Fingers – Cocktail weiners simmered in BBQ sauce. A funny name for a surprisingly crowd-pleasing bite!
- Lembas Bread – Simple squares of flatbread, perfect for Elves on the go.
- The Council of Elrond – A tray of classic Keebler Elf cookies for a sweet little nod to Rivendell. 🍪
- Rings of Power – We went all out with ring-shaped goodies: mini donuts, Cheerios, onion ring chips, Fudge Stripes, and peach rings.
- Po-tay-toes – As Samwise would say! We served a few kinds of potato chips—because you can boil ’em, mash ’em, or stick ’em in a bowl. 😉
- Chips & Guac – Blue corn tortilla chips paired with a bright green guacamole nestled right in the middle like a little patch of the Shire.
- Strawberries & Cream – Fresh strawberries served with a bowl of fluffy homemade whipped cream. Light, sweet, and totally Hobbit-approved.
- Farmer Maggot’s Root Vegetables – Practically good enough to steal ๐ – all served on a wood serving platter.
- Gollum’s Raw & Wriggling Fish – Don’t worry, it was just Swedish gummy fish!
🧀 The Shirecuterie Board (Our Favorite Touch!)
One of the standout pieces was this stunning Shirecuterie board—a whimsical Lord of the Rings twist on a classic charcuterie board.

I used a large round wooden tray and placed a custom sugar cookie designed to look like a Hobbit door right in the center. 🍃
Surrounding the cookie “door” were:
- Clusters of red and green grapes
- Assorted cheeses (brie, cheddar, blue cheese, and more)
- A mix of meats like salami and prosciutto
- Marinated mozzarella balls and olives
- Toasted nuts, dried fruits, and crackers
Our cookie decorator even added a little edible “No Admittance Except on Party Business” sign for an extra Hobbiton-worthy detail. Between the edible elements and tiny props, this tray felt like a tiny picnic in the Shire!

Lord of the Rings Cake
We kept it classic with cake, cupcakes, and, of course, a sweet little smash cake (that my child devoured!).
For the topper, I purchased a simple wooden “ONE” topper—had I owned my xTool M1 or xTool P2, I would have whipped up my own!

We also added edible ivory leaves to the top of the cupcakes for a little something extra.

Tableware & Drinks
To keep things simple (and cleanup easy!), we opted for disposable partyware that still felt elegant and on theme.
We used paper plates with green ivy and gold rims that paired perfectly with our Middle-earth-inspired decor. For utensils, we chose disposable wooden cutlery that gave a natural, rustic feel—very Shire-appropriate!

Drinks were set up self-serve style and included something for everyone:
- Mimosas for the adults
- Hot coffee served in disposable cups (because every party needs caffeine!)
- Sparkling water for a fizzy, festive touch
- And of course, juice boxes for the littlest Hobbits 🧃
It was an easy, stress-free way to serve guests—plus, everything looked so cute together!
Party Favors
Instead of traditional goody bags, we sent our guests home with something extra special—custom sugar cookies, each one a little edible work of art! 🍪 These precious, beautifully decorated cookies featured:
- A hand-painted watercolor Shire scene
- A classic round Hobbit door (complete with woodgrain detail!)
- A sweet little onesie featuring the Tree of Gondor 🌳

Each cookie was individually wrapped in cellophane and finished with a matching thank-you tag to tie the whole theme together. They were almost too pretty to eat—but let’s be honest, they didn’t last long!
We also had a few LOTR-inspired designs made just for Teddy, including a #1 cookie and a custom name cookie!

If you wanted to do something different than cookies, some other party favor ideas we considered were:
- Mini notebooks with “There and Back Again” covers with crayons
- DIY elven headband kits (with ribbon, faux leaves, and elastic)
- Hobbit inspired bookmarks (printable + laminated)
- Foam swords or plastic daggers
- Bubble wands labeled “Wizard Staffs”
- Glow stick “sting” swords that light up!
- Plastic compasses or “Elven wayfinders”
- Stickers or temporary tattoos with LOTR imagery
Kid-Friendly Activities
We didn’t plan many structured games, and honestly? It worked out perfectly. The kids had an absolute blast just running wild in our playroom, which quickly turned into a joyful mess of laughter and toys.
One of the biggest hits of the party was the DIY ball pit! We grabbed a cute inflatable kiddie pool and filled it with hundreds of plastic balls. It was Hobbit-sized chaos in the best way—every kid dove right in, and it stayed packed the entire party.

We also had a few foam swords about, and that added an extra layer of adventurous fun too.

And of course, opening Teddy’s presents turned into a full-group activity. The older kids loved helping him tear through wrapping paper and trying out the new toys right away.
It made for the sweetest memories and so many giggles!
The Birthday Boy’s Hobbit-Inspired Outfit 🧙♂️
Is it even a Lord of the Rings birthday party without a tiny hobbit in attendance? Our birthday boy looked straight out of the Shire in the outfit we put together, and I truly don’t think it could’ve been any cuter! 😍

He wore a brown corduroy vest and pants set paired with a crisp white shirt—classic Hobbit-core.
We added a dark green cloak that tied at the neck with a sweet black ribbon, and finished the look with a leaf-shaped brooch just like the ones gifted by the Elves of Lothlórien. ✨

We also armed him for his journey with a teeny plastic sword—a Sting of his very own!
And of course, around his neck hung the most important accessory of all: The One Ring—on a chain, just like Frodo’s.

He was cozy, cute, and completely in character. Watching him toddle around in his little cloak (and stripey socks, hah!) was a total highlight of the day.
