Halloween crafts for kids
As a family of Griffyndors (could we be anything else?!), we can’t get enough of Harry Potter. I’m pretty sure I’ve lost track of the number of movie marathons we’ve had… not to mention how many times I’ve read the books cover to cover.
We even like to joke that my daughter Lily was named after Lily Potter (even though she’s not!) LOL.
When the thought came about to make our very own DIY Harry Potter wands, naturally, I had to get the whole family involved!
We got outside, picked the best sticks we could find, and got crafty! Everyone customized their wand to best suit them, and before long, you could swear there was actual real magic floating around!
Rest assured, this craft is not only fun to make but will keep kids occupied for a while as they run around casting their own Harry Potter spells! They swish, flick, and chant “wingardium leviosa,” and you almost believe it’s real!
They might even imagine they’re running around Hogwarts with Harry, Hermione, and Ron. 😉

FAQ about making DIY Harry Potter wands
Naturally, you might have a few questions about making these fun wands! I’ve gathered a few practical and a few fun questions for you below. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to me 🙂
Or we could even just talk about Harry Potter, lol!
How do you find the best sticks for crafting?
The best rule of thumb is not to choose anything that appears too “perfect.” The knobs and imperfections are perfect for giving these wands a rustic and vintage feel.
But be sure to choose sticks that have tight bark! You don’t want your DIY Harry Potter Wands to flake and fall apart after you’ve spent so much time on them.
How can I create the best texture for my Harry Potter wands?
There is no one way to sculpt your Harry Potter wands so have fun with it!
Use the hot glue gun to create fun new textures and shapes and add as many layers as you want. You can make jewels look deep set or even make certain areas wider than others!
How long are Harry Potter wands?
If you want to make your DIY Harry Potter wands to be as ‘real’ as possible, the standard length is deemed to be in the range of 9-14″.
While longer wands may feel good in the hands of a taller individual, it’s important to account for personality type and style of magic as well. There are many factors to consider when choosing your wand length!
What are Harry Potter wands made of?
Harry Potter wands are made from a variety of different woods. Have fun with this, and try to find sticks from a tree made from a particular type of wood!
Some options include cedar, cherry, pine, maple, walnut, alder, chestnut, English oak, and many others. Each type of wood has its own unique powers, so choose wisely!
