This is one of those classic holiday cocktails you’ll reach for year after year. Whiskey Fizz is a really strong drink that goes down smooth and has just the right amount of sweetness to it.
How do you enjoy your mixed drinks? Do you like them really strong without much mixed in? Or do you prefer really fruity and sweet drinks where you can barely taste the alcohol?
My whiskey fizz is a perfect middle-of-the-road drink that is perfect for strong drinkers and fruity drinkers alike.
How to Make Whisky Fizz
Beginner mixologists can whip up this fun drink without any problems at all. So if you haven’t made mixed drinks before, this is the perfect place to start.
Ingredients
This drink only has a few very simple ingredients:
- Fresh blackberries
- Cinnamon whiskey
- Ginger Ale
Yup, that’s it! Now how much of each is honestly up to you and your preferences. But here’s how I made it. And every one that tried my version absolutely loved it!
My recipe makes two glasses of whiskey fizz.
Step 1: Mash the Blackberries
Smash the blueberries with about a tablespoon of water. When you think you extracted all the juice out of the berries, strain them and keep that sugary juice in a cup on the side.
Step 2: Pour the Whiskey
Next, you are going to split about 1.5 ounces (a shot) of the cinnamon whiskey between the two glasses.
Yes, you can put an entire shot of whiskey into each glass if you prefer. That will make it a very strong drink though, so be prepared.
Step 3: Add the Blackberry Juice
Now pour the blackberry juice into each cup. Try and split the juice up as evenly as you can.
Step 4: Top With Ginger Ale
Next, just top it off with as much ginger ale as you want. This is entirely up to you. If you want a really strong drink, use less ginger ale.
Then just garnish the drink for a little extra flair. I used some fresh blackberries and sprigs of rosemary. Aren’t they seasonally beautiful?
Best Type of Whiskey
There are four main types of whiskey you can buy, and honestly any of them will taste brilliant with the blackberry juice and ginger ale.
What are the different types of whiskey you can buy?
When you shop for whiskey, you’ll notice these 4 types:
- Bourbon – Made from corn and typically made in Kentucky
- USA Whiskey – Also goes by “Tennesse Whiskey,” this is filtered through sugar maple charcoal. Kentucky bourbon is not filtered this way.
- Rye Whiskey – Made mostly from rye grain
- Scotch – Made in Scotland primarily from barley.
Fireball Whiskey
I used Fireball to make my Whiskey Fizz. It has this amazing spiciness to it that is unmistakable. If you use Fireball too, I’d cut it down to half a shot in the glass. You’ll notice a huge difference, it will be so much easier to drink this way.
What To Eat With Whiskey Fizz
This is definitely a party drink. It’s best to sip it with your friends and family members while munching on milder party foods. Since it has both a firey spice and sweet flavors to it, you want to serve sweet treats and slightly-salty things to munch on.
These are my favorite party snacks that will go great with my whiskey fizz.
Can you use blackberry juice instead?
If you want, you can try to just add a splash of bottled blackberry juice. However, mashing fresh blackberries gives it a much more tart flavor. Plus, bottled blackberry juices you buy on the shelf will have added sugars and most are mixed with other fruit juices.
Both bottled and hand-mashed blackberry juice will taste delicious in this drink. I just prefer to smash the blackberries myself.
Fireball Whiskey Substitute
If you can’t find Fireball or you just don’t like it, there are quite a few alternatives that taste nearly the same. Try one of these:
- Chicken Cock Cinnamon Whiskey, 86-Proof
- Jack Daniels Tennessee Fire, 70-proof
- Wild Turkey Honey Sting, 71-proof
- Jim Beam Fire, 70-proof
- Patron XO Cafe Incendio, 60-proof
- Jeremiah Weed Cinnamon Whiskey, 71.2-proof
- Fire Water Cinnamon Schnapps, 100-proof
It’s ok to use just a straight bourbon or whiskey instead of a cinnamon one. I know not everyone likes that bold bite!
When to Enjoy Whiskey Fizz
This is the perfect holiday drink to make for in-home dates with your partner. You can also make it for your friends on a girl’s night in. If you are going to be watching a Christmas movie with your family, pour a glass for the adults in the group!
You definitely want to serve this chilled! The cinnamon whiskey tastes much better when it’s cold than when it is room temperature.
Cinnamon is a classic holiday flavor. It warms you up on the inside while the weather is blowing like crazy outside.
