Coffee with HGTV’s David Bromstad
Friends! I have a great treat in store for you today. So not only am I going to tell you all about my super-fun conversation with Mr. David Bromstad himself, but I also have a delicious recipe for his coffee protein shake to share with you all. 🙂 First let’s talk about David.
In case you all aren’t avid HGTV/design fanatics like myself, you might not know that he is kind of a really big deal. David is the original winner of HGTV’s Design Star and has appeared in a ton of magazines and shows ever since. I was so grateful to have the opportunity to sit down and chat with him over the phone—we talked about life, design and…coffee.
Like most people, I’ve been a coffee drinker for several years now. I love bold coffee with a good amount of cream and a dash of sugar. I was super excited to hear about David’s new partnership with our favorite creamer—Coffee-mate! He was given the opportunity to completely redesign the labels for Coffee-mates’ bottles. They are so cute and only available for a limited time exclusively at Target!
Before we get to the coffee recipe, I want to share some of David’s design tips:
1) I’m happy to report that David Bromstad is a fan of painting walls white. Phew. I was feeling ashamed talking to the King of Color and admitting I had white walls in our bedroom, but he totally has them too. He explained that colors pop better against a white backdrop, and that it’s easier to change out accessories than paint colors. He also pointed out that white is “clean and fresh” and that there’s a reason museums have white walls—to let the color and art truly shine.
2) I asked about his design trend predications for next season. He said he felt that eco-friendly decorating will continue to be huge. He suggests incorporating that trend by bringing natural elements into a room like foliage, repurposed furniture and recycled items. He also encourages making your space feel and look lived in! One way to do this is to make your home personal by designing little vignettes filled with items that are important to you.
3) We also chatted about the challenge of keeping a cohesive feel throughout a home and not being fearful of bold color palettes. David had some super insightful and really wise advice to share—pick out the most expensive pieces of furniture first and pick your paint color last. There are thousands of colors and it’s the most affordable design element, so even though paint makes a huge impact you need to start with the furniture pieces you love and make the paint work for you. Isn’t that smart? Definitely doing paint last next time I design a room! 🙂
Now it’s coffee time. Yay!
David Bromstad’s Coffee Protein Shake
serves two
Ingredients:
-12 oz brewed coffee
-4 tbsp Coffee-mate creamer (we did 2 hazelnut and 2 vanilla)
-1 banana
-1 scoop of protein powder
-1 fiber cookie
-ice
Combine all ingredients in a blender. If you prefer, you can set aside 1/4th of the fiber cookie and crumble on top.
I loved his protein shake recipe. It’s loaded with protein, fiber and coffee but has a creamy, sweet taste to it. I’ve made it the past few days for breakfast and both Scott and I are big fans of this one!
If you’re a coffee fan yourself, I’ve got even better news for you! You can enter the Make A Splash Sweepstakes. It’s pretty simple—all you need to do is share a picture of your favorite coffee moment on Twitter, Facebook and/or Instagram using the hashtag #CMInspiresSweepEntry and win some awesome prizes like a signed David Bromstad Giclée, Coffee-mate creamer for a year or a $500 Target gift card. Check out this site for more info!
I’m super excited for this promotion and for the new Coffee-mate bottle designs. They honor the tradition of the standard labels but add the perfect amount of fun and zest…and ya’ll know I am a fan of fun and zest! 🙂 So tell me—how do you take your coffee? French-pressed and bold? Or do you like more creamer than coffee. I don’t judge. 😉

Wow! That’s so neat! I wasn’t familiar with David, but now I know! Thanks for sharing his tips and it also makes me feel better for living in an apartment with white walls (we *could* paint them, but why bother till we get a place of our own? ;)).
That shake sounds amazing, I gotta try it out!
Happy Friday! 🙂 🙂 🙂 xoxo
That’s so cool that you talked with David Bromstad! I am a huge HGTV fan, and it’s almost always on TV in the background. There’s so much inspiration to be found on every show. Also, I love the recipe that David shared with you. So fun… what an awesome experience for you 🙂
what a wonderful experience! Love him. I take my esspresso with a bit of almond milk 🙂
Oh my goodness! I just have to know….did he say “hot soup” when you were talking to him? Haha – I love David Bromstad!
That looks amazing….and I LOVE David!!!
Looks delish and is full of protein! Wow- I have got to try this!
Wow! How amazing that you got to talk to him!!!! I love the tips he gave you! White it is!
David’s got a secret gift for recipes I see. How cool that you got to speak with him
What a great opportunity ~ good for you! I LOVE Coffee Mate products…French Vanilla being my favorite and a “must have” daily. I seem to drink more coffee in the fall/winter and I love trying other flavors then.
Thanks so much for the protein drink recipe! Just my style ~ 🙂

white walls, huh? i’ve been enticed by all the patterned wallpaper lately, but this might make me stick to my white-wall roots :0) and this drink looks so, so delicious – and how awesome that he got to design the bottles??
A coffee party sounds divine!
So cool you got to chat with him! And I love what he says about white walls! 🙂
Thanks for sharing those great tips. I don’t have white walls, but I do love colors that are almost white. The color in my bedroon, for instance, has just a hint of a blueish-green hue to it, but still very neutral. It’s my favorite. I think I’d paint every room in the house that color if I thought I could get away with it.
First, congratulations n such an amazing interview! Yay 🙂 Next, coffee and protein together? Awesome. Thanks so much for sharing!
I LOVE David Bromstad! His show was always my favorite on HGTV. I love how bold and creative he is! So jealous that you got to chat with him!
And a coffee protein shake?! I’m IN! I can’t say no to anything coffee-related. Pinning this one now!

Love him and am totally going to try that shake now!
This looks and sounds delicious. I love white walls too but with the kiddies it’s a challenge.
