Are you getting your message across?

When I was in college at the University of Oklahoma, one of my sorority sisters had a car accident and hit a mail truck.  Although shaken up, she was fine and over dinner we began to joke about the issues of hitting a public mail vehicle. When I jokingly asked her if mail flew all over the busy intersection upon impact, she laughed and said, “actually, yes, it did.”

I remember feeling absolutely horrified. What if something important got lost? In my (highly active) imaginative mind, I imagined a love struck young military wife waiting for a letter from her husband overseas that floating away, never to reach her aching arms.  Or an apology letter sent from an absent father to his adult children, trying to make amends before his impending death, only to die alone and sad.  All those letters, all those truths and secrets- gone.

Years later, I still think back on that brief imaginary moment.  These days, with electronic communication, the ball can be dropped in even more ways.  What if you choose to send an important message to someone via text message, and the message fails to go through? Or perhaps you choose to send a facebook message- what if the person doesn’t check those daily or (like me) reads them and completely forgets to ever respond?

Scott and I watched the new Dallas on tv the other day. As cheesy as the show is, I have to admit it’s fun seeing the city we live in on TV! I won’t ruin the show for any of you interested viewers, but one of the characters called off her wedding over an email she thinks her fiance sent – the kicker is- he wasn’t the one who sent or wrote it. Two years later the finally talked about it – surprise! They both were in love and had wanted to get married!  Of course this conversation takes place minutes before the groom walks down the aisle with someone else. Drama Drama!

As a society we’ve moved almost completely away from communicating on a face-to-face basis which leaves me to wonder how much that we think we are saying is not getting heard? I spend most of my time in my business online, and although the internet has made the world feel a little smaller there are some cautions to be taken.  Instead of emailing your parents, pick up the phone and say hello.  Instead of texting your friends, why not give them a call? Or set up a time to go grab some coffee? After all, love makes the world go round!

XoXo
