Confession: we haven’t had bedside tables for the last 4 months. Crazy, right? I kept waiting for the perfect pair to jump out at me, but after months of fruitless searching and really missing having a place to put things next to bed, we finally rectified the situation with an Ikea Rast makeover. Check it out!
If you haven’t heard of the Ikea Rast, it’s a 3-drawer chest that retails for $35 and is made from unpainted pine, meaning you can paint or stain it however you want. There are some really creative makeovers out there you can google, but I wanted something simple and bright to balance out the darker wood of the canopy bed.
Scott was kind enough to put together the Rasts for me, then I took over and gave each a coat of stain. After they were dry I used chalk paint mixed with a bit of water to whitewash each. Lastly, we added fun drawer pulls from Home Goods. It was an afternoon of work that was well worth it! 🙂 Here’s my side:
Aren’t those pulls pretty? Of course if it’s white and gold I am sold. 😛 Here’s Scott’s side!
The room looks much brighter to me with the addition of these bedside tables. Plus, I have somewhere to put my things now, yay!
The canopy curtains are new too and also from Ikea. It’s so fun to sleep with them drawn, or read a book with my table lamp dimmed by netting. It feels like a vacation somehow. 🙂
The lamps are from Target and are my favorite things ever right now! I get to read late into the night with no guilt. 😛
Does anyone know what kind of plant this is? It’s the best ever. It never dies! I forget to water it (sometimes for weeks at a time!) and it just keeps growing. For awhile I thought maybe it was a really realistic feeling faux plant, but then it started growing even more leaves! So cool.
Next on my list for our room is getting some art hung. And maybe new curtains for the windows? I still can’t decide! I go back and forth on if I like that vintage print or not. What do you all think?
oh my gosh, absolutely gorgeous! we have mismatched bedside tables now that i really dislike, but it’s hard finding some that are small enough (we have a small bedroom with a king size bed lol) and with 3 drawers for storage. i think i looked into these and they were too big but i might have another look because i love this makeover you did! fabulous.
Those nightstands turned out great! I have seen so many awesome DIY’s with those RAST chests…makes me want to buy some! I also love those Target lamps…I have some similar throughout my apartment, but they are a bit more squaty. Great finish on them, though!
Thanks Emily! I want to do another round of Rasts! I’d love to do something more bold and colorful, but felt like our room needed some white at this point. Next time! 😀
The bedside tables look great! I really like the curtains, actually. And the canopy curtains – love love love. If we ever get a new bed, I want one with a canopy so I can add the curtains. Of course, I see my cat causing a lot of ruckus with fun curtains like that to climb, so Kevin may veto the idea…. 🙂
Oh I didn’t think about cats! Maybe they will leave it alone? Hah. Thanks for the vote about the curtains, i like them too but they are legit vintage!
Um hello everything about this room is gorgeous! I love how you made over the nightstand too! I don’t know how you went so long without one!
Me either! It’s crazy to think about now. Makes me want to finish the rest of my to-do list! 😀
I am in love with the finished bed table!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you Nadine! 🙂
Love your treatment on the chests. The room is dark with the other wood. Matching tables would just look like Bedrooms to Go. The pulls are simple but add a classic touch to a modern canopy treatment. I never thought about a canopy softening a lamp’s bright light so it wouldn’t disturb my husband. I’m trying a piece of lace I have to see if this solves one of our little problems. I even like the printed, romantic curtains.
I got so inspired by your canopy that I srarted mentally measuring my room. Our ceiling fan is off center and partly over the bed, but I think I could do a half canopy, which would still mask the lamplight. No lacy grotto, I’m afraid, but I think this is doable. Thanks!
A half canopy would be just as fun! I keep trying to convince Scott to let me replace the ceiling fan with a chandelier but it hasn’t happened yet. 🙂 i’m working on it! I love the idea of a piece of lace over the light too!
I love an Ikea Hack and this one is great!
Wish I knew what the plant was called, I’m looking for a very forgiving house plant too lol. Beautiful room btw. I love the knobs.
Your dresser turned out beautifully! Thanks for sharing your crafty inspiration on this week’s Monday Funday Party!
I think your plant is called a ZZ plant. Love the bedside dressers!
Re the plant: it’s a Zamioculcas, also known as Zanzibar Gem – or as Jessica said, commonly referred to as the ZZ plant. Re the room: *love* the nightstands – nicely done!
May I know what kind of stain you use ?
I super love this color !
thanks for sharing !
I LOVE these tables! We would love for you to come link up for Wall to Wall DIY Wednesday over at R&R at home!
so where’s the ‘hack?’ I see a before and after pic but that’s it.
