How to Make Tassels

Happy Thursday friends!! This week has FLOWN by for me!  Hopefully for you all too…one more day until the weekend, woo hoo! I have another fun DIY for you all today- not only is it cheap, easy and quick, but there are so many possibilities that I literally have laid in bed and thought of them.  Are you ready? Tassels.

Yup, tassels are totally in right now.  I have seen these classy accents on everything from clothing to pillows to jewelry.  I have some fun projects in mind for the next few weeks, but let’s start with the basics- how to make tassels.

Start with picking up some embroidery floss at your local craft store.  These were on sale at Hobby Lobby for $1 each, and each one makes one tassel.  I had a really, really hard time choosing a color.  I wanted to get a million different ones, but I made myself be reasonable and get 12. 🙂 My advice would be to check the numbers on each floss set to make sure they are all identical- there are so many shades and varieties that it can be easy to mix them up. Example- there are 2 different colors in the photo below- can you spot the one that doesn’t belong? 🙂

To make the tassel you start by wrapping the floss around your hand. I made sure to keep my fingers somewhat spread because I quickly realized I was cutting off blood circulation to my fingers by my vigorous, steadfast wrapping. Having fingers is good.  Very good.

Once you have the entire strand wrapped around your hand, locate one end of the floss and get ready to tie a knot.

Tying the knot is pretty simple.  You loop one end of the thread under the floss wrapped on your hand, loop it around the floss again, pull up and tie a knot.

You are basically making a thread circle that’s knotted together by the end of the floss, like so:

Now it’s time to turn it from a circle to a tassel.  Holding the loop by the knot you have created, cut the circle.  You want the sides to be as even as possible when you cut, but if they aren’t you can go back and trim them to be even.

And that’s it.  See? Seriously, ridiculously simple and adorable.  You are now a tassel creator.  🙂

YAY.  Like I mentioned previously, I have a lot of fun projects in mind with these, but what do you all think? Do you have anything lying about that is just dying to be tassel-ized?!!

  1. Just a thought to make your tassels look a little more finished: After your final step, take more floss and wrap it several times around the whole tassel maybe one quarter of the way from the top (tie off however you think best). This holds both sides of the tassel together.
