How To Make DIY Sugar Scrub

This is a DIY recipe that literally takes just 5 minutes. I’ll show you how to make it and how to package it up so it lasts a while and doesn’t go bad.

That’s honestly why it makes such a wonderful gift; it doesn’t take long to make but it still smells soooo good.

Rose Sugar Scrub Ingredients

First off, gather your ingredients. The fun part about this sugar scrub recipe is that you can customize it completely!

Here’s what I used:

  • 1 cup of brown sugar (you could sub for white sugar or salt)
  • 1/2 cup of coconut oil (olive oil would also work)
  • 3 drops essential oils (I love to use Young Living or Plant Therapy)
  • 10 rose petals

Mix Up the Ingredients

Now, it’s the easy part!

Take all of your ingredients and combine everything together. Scoop your ingredients into a bowl and mix well.

I personally enjoy using a mortar and pestle because it smashes the rose petals really well and mixes it all together completely. Plus, it’s just so much fun to use!

When you feeling it’s all blended together, scoop some of the sugar scrub into a glass container and seal it tight to make sure it doesn’t dry out or go bad.

Tip: To make it look extra pretty, top it off with a few more rose petals before you close it. That way, every time you open the jar, you’ll smell the rose scent.

How to Use Sugar Scrub

If you are going to give this away as a gift, you might want to include a pretty little card with instructions, just in case someone hasn’t ever used sugar scrub. (That’s my plan for my gal pal party!)

This easy DIY sugar scrub is used as a way to exfoliate, or remove, dead skin. It helps your skin glow because the dead skin washes off and you are left with a more vibrant look.

Here is how to use this sugar scrub.

  1. Take a shower. You want to use this on clean skin so I would recommend just leaving the container of sugar scrub in your bathroom.
  2. Scoop a quarter-sized amount of sugar scrub. If you have sensitive skin, you might want to use less of it. Make sure to test it out on a small patch of skin before applying it to your entire body.
  3. Massage it into your skin. Use circular motions. when applying it to your skin. This self-massage will also help increase circulation throughout your body as well.
  4. Rinse it off. Then, use warm or lukewarm water to gently rinse off the sugar scrub.
  5. Follow with lotion. Protect your skin by using a healing lotion after exfoliating it.

Then, you’re all done!

Quick And Easy Tips To Making This Homemade Sugar Scrub

Like I mentioned before, this DIY recipe is completely customizable so I wanted to share some of my fun tips on how to make this easy rose sugar scrub special- and just for you.

Where to Find Fresh Rose Petals

I used fresh rose petals because there is nothing quite like the smell of real flowers. Plus, it will add more texture to the sugar scrub, which will exfoliate your skin more effectively.

Fresh rose petals are hard to find, so I picked up roses from Central Market and pulled the petals off myself.

Aren’t the colors gorgeous?

If you aren’t able to access fresh roses, I have bought some of these dried rose petals off Amazon and they did the trick.

Best Essential Oil for DIY Sugar Scrub

This is the fun part! You can change the entire aroma and experience just by adding different oils. You can use whatever essential oil you want, or even skip altogether if you don’t have any on hand. But trust me, this smells so much better when you use essential oils.

Let’s look at some of the most popular oils to use in this DIY sugar scrub.

Ylang Ylang

For Valentine’s Day, Ylang Ylang is a great oil to use. It is a musky and earthy scent that is known to balance hormones. It’s known as an aphrodisiac oil, increasing libido. Some people like to use it in homemade lotions and body butter for this reason.

Lavender

If you are using fresh rose petals, then use another floral oil like lavender. They will combine beautifully! Lavender is known to be a relaxing oil; so you can use this sugar scrub at night to unwind.

Geranium Oil

Another floral oil that is fantastic for your skin and smells wonderful with rose petals is geranium. It is known to naturally relieve anxiety and stress and at the same time, also helps balance emotions and hormones.

Most Frequently Asked Questions About This Sugar Scrub Recipe

These are some of the questions I get asked about the most when it comes to this DIY sugar scrub recipe.

Is It Safe For Your Face?

I personally advise against using it on your face. I’d use this on elbows, legs, arms and other parts of the body.

This mostly depends on how strong the essential oils are. If you used to a lot of oils, try to avoid the eye area as it could cause irritation.

Dermatologists also recommend using smaller granules on your face and larger ones on your body. This is because your face is so sensitive that it could irritate it and cause redness and other issues if it is exfoliated too much.

Can This DIY Sugar Scrub Go On Your Lips?

Yes, this is completely safe for your lips! In fact, our lips shed skin so frequently, that they could benefit from something like a homemade sugar scrub.

You can use this once a week on your lips but if you notice them feeling raw, stop using it. Always follow up with a lip balm of some sort to protect your lips from the dry air. I’m currently using this lip balm from Burt’s Bees and I’m sort of obsessed.

How To Package Homemade Sugar Scrub As A Gift

So the “goodie bag” for my Galentine’s day party, I’m going to gift my friends some of this rose sugar scrub and put it in a pretty little jar with a personal note for each of them attached to the lid.

I would recommend always using a glass jar, especially when you are using essential oils.

Where I Found My Sugar Scrub Jar

I found the glass jar in Ikea and I topped it off with a red doily I picked up at the Dollar Spot from Target. I have to say- That dollar section gets me every time. I always stray there immediately after I walk in.

You can also like to use these 3 oz. glass spice jars to store them as well.
