Coming up with family Halloween costumes is one of my favorite parts of fall! Over the years, we’ve dressed up as everything from the Wizard of Oz crew to Peter Pan characters, Cinderella, zookeepers, and more — and I have the real family photos to prove it.

Most of our costumes have been for a family of four, so if you’re trying to coordinate two adults and two kids, you’ll find plenty of ideas that work especially well for that setup.

But I’ve also included options that are easy to adapt for babies, toddlers, larger families, or even the family dog.

And while I love a good costume, I am not someone who wants to spend three weeks sewing four elaborate outfits from scratch. Most of our family Halloween costumes are a mix of store-bought pieces, things we already own, and a few simple accessories that pull the whole theme together.

So whether you want something classic, funny, easy, or a little more unusual, here are some of my favorite family costume ideas — starting with the ones we’ve actually worn ourselves!

Why You’ll Love These Family Costume Ideas

  • Real family costumes: Many of these are costumes our family has actually worn, complete with our own photos.
  • Perfect for a family of four, but easy to add more or less: Several of our favorite themes naturally have four main characters, but I am including alternatives for each to meet your family size!
  • Easy to customize: Swap characters in or out depending on the ages and number of people in your family.
  • No expert DIY skills required: Most of our costumes start with purchased basics and simple accessories.
  • Ideas for babies and toddlers: There are plenty of cute ways to work your littlest family member into the theme.
  • Lots of recognizable characters: From Disney classics to Wizard of Oz and Peter Pan, these are costumes people will immediately recognize.

And, if you’re planning all the Halloween fun at once, don’t miss my boo basket ideas for kids too — they’re such a cute way to kick off the spooky season long before the costumes come out.

Psst…I’m giving a TON of easy, practical costume ideas here! But, if you are looking for something specific, feel free to use the table of contents below to jump ahead.

Cinderella Family Halloween Costume

Our Cinderella family Halloween costume is still one of my favorites because every person had such a distinct character, and it worked perfectly for our family of four.

Family posing in Cinderella costumes beside a pumpkin carriage outdoors

We dressed as Cinderella, Prince Charming, the Fairy Godmother, and Gus Gus.

We literally had people stop us during our photoshoot to ask if they could take photos with us. I felt like a real life celeb!

And honestly, baby Gus Gus might have stolen the entire show. I mean, look how cuuuuute (unbiasedly!).

Regardless of how many people you have in the family, Cinderella works so well as a family theme. There are characters for every age. An older child can be Cinderella, a less enthusastic teen may love the idea of being a villian like the stepsisters, adults can take on Prince Charming or the Fairy Godmother, and a baby or toddler makes an incredibly cute mouse.

You could also expand the theme with:

  • Jaq
  • Lady Tremaine
  • Anastasia
  • Drizella
  • another mouse
  • a pumpkin carriage-inspired costume or a pumpkin-themed stroller

If you’re looking specifically for a family Halloween costume with a baby, Cinderella is a really fun option. A soft mouse costume is easy for a little one to wear, but it still makes the overall family theme instantly recognizable.

Here’s how we pulled off this look:

Peter Pan Family Halloween Costume

Peter Pan is another family Halloween costume that works especially well for a family of four.

Peter Pan, Tinker Bell, Wendy and Captain Hook family costume for four

We went with Peter Pan, Tinker Bell, Wendy, and Captain Hook, which gave everyone a very different costume while still making the group feel completely cohesive.

I love this particular combination because you get such a fun mix of looks. Tinker Bell has the bright green dress and wings, Peter has his classic green outfit and hat, Wendy has the soft blue dress, and Captain Hook gets to be as dramatic as possible.

If your family is larger, there are plenty of additional Neverland characters to work with:

  • Mr. Smee
  • Lost Boys
  • John
  • Michael
  • Tiger Lily
  • the Crocodile

For a smaller family, Peter Pan, Wendy, and Tinker Bell would make an easy trio.

And if you have a baby, a tiny Lost Boy or crocodile would be pretty adorable.

Wicked Family Halloween Costume

Our Wicked family Halloween costume was especially fun because we didn’t limit ourselves to only exact character costumes — we built the whole group around the world of Oz.

We had Elphaba, Glinda, an Emerald City-inspired look, and the cutest little flying monkey.

Elphaba and Glinda make the theme immediately recognizable, but I love that the other costumes simply coordinated with the setting and story.

That’s actually one of my favorite tricks for putting together family Halloween costumes: you don’t necessarily need every person to portray a major named character.

My daughter wanted to be Elphaba, so we built our theme around it! As long as you have a few recognizable characters anchoring the theme, the rest of the family can coordinate through colors, props, or smaller supporting roles.

Other Wicked costume ideas could include:

  • Fiyero
  • The Wizard
  • Madame Morrible
  • Nessarose
  • Boq
  • Scarecrow

And of course, Wicked overlaps naturally with The Wizard of Oz, so you could mix characters from both if that gives your family more options.

Zoo Animal Family Costume

This was such a fun costume idea when the kids were little because it was basically built around letting them be animals.

We had a tiger and a leopard/big cat, and we even decorated the stroller with oversized jungle leaves and lights to make it feel like part of the theme.

That little detail made the whole thing feel so much more intentional without requiring some massive DIY project.

You could use almost any animal costumes for this idea:

  • tiger
  • leopard
  • lion
  • monkey
  • giraffe
  • zebra
  • elephant
  • cheetah

If the adults want to coordinate without wearing full animal costumes, dress them as zookeepers or safari guides with khaki clothing, boots or sneakers, binoculars, and a neutral button-down shirt.

This is also one of the easiest family Halloween costumes for babies and toddlers because plush animal costumes tend to be cozy, comfortable, and easy to move around in.

Lord of the Rings / Frodo Costume

This one wasn’t technically a full family Halloween costume, but I had to include it because our son dressed as Frodo for his Lord of the Rings birthday party, and it remains one of my favorite themed outfits we’ve ever done.

Toddler dressed as Frodo Baggins with brown vest green cape and ring necklace

His Frodo costume included:

Honestly, toddlers make pretty perfect little Hobbits, if you ask me.

If you wanted to turn this into a full Lord of the Rings family costume, you could add:

  • Sam
  • Gandalf
  • Aragorn
  • Legolas
  • Arwen
  • Galadriel
  • Éowyn
  • Gollum
  • another Hobbit

This would be such a fun choice for a family that wants something a little different from the usual movie-character costumes.

I also have an entire Lord of the Rings first birthday party post with more photos and themed ideas if you want to see how we used the Frodo costume.

Easy Disney Family Costume

If your family loves Disney but you don’t want four full character costumes, coordinating park-tourist outfits can be a really easy option.

Matching Disney tees, ears, fanny packs, sneakers, cameras, autograph books, etc. can make the whole family look intentionally themed without everyone dressing as a specific character.

Bonus points: you now have an excellent outfit ready to go for Disney world! 😉

Bluey Family Costume

A Bluey family costume is practically made for a family of four because you already have four obvious characters:

  • Bandit
  • Chilli
  • Bluey
  • Bingo

And you don’t necessarily need to buy four official character costumes.

One easy DIY approach is to use basic clothing in each character’s colors and then add simple dog ears and clip-on tails.

For example:

Bandit: blue shirt + khaki shorts + blue ears and tail

Chilli: orange shirt + cream pants or leggings + orange ears and tail

Bluey: bright blue dress, or a blue shirt and shorts + blue ears and tail

Bingo: orange shirt or orange dress + cream shorts + orange ears and tail

Then finish everyone’s outfit with sneakers you already own. Easy peasy and you will likely wear elements of this costume again so budget-friendly too.

The Flintstones Family Costume

The Flintstones is another theme that works beautifully as a family Halloween costume for four.

Fred Flintstone inspired costume with orange spotted tunic blue tie shorts and brown sandals

A classic lineup would be:

  • Fred
  • Wilma
  • Pebbles
  • Bamm-Bamm

You could also swap in Dino or add more characters if you have a larger group.

This theme is especially cute with younger kids because Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm have such recognizable outfits without needing anything complicated.

Harry Potter Family Costume

Harry Potter is one of the easiest family costume themes to customize because there are so many characters.

You could choose:

  • Harry
  • Hermione
  • Ron
  • Dumbledore
  • Hagrid
  • Luna
  • Draco
  • Fleur
  • Professor McGonagall
  • Voldemort
  • Unicorn or other magical beast

Or everyone can simply wear Hogwarts robes, scarves, and carry wands without portraying a specific character.

And if you want to make the wands yourselves, I have a full tutorial for DIY Harry Potter wands that would work perfectly with the costumes.

And yes, apparently Voldemort can also be paired with his favorite snack aka a unicorn in our household, because Halloween doesn’t always need to make sense and it was too hot to wear robes. 😂

Jurassic Park Family Costume

Jurassic Park is one of the easiest family Halloween costumes if you want the adults to wear mostly normal clothing.

Have the grown-ups dress like park employees or explorers with:

  • khaki shirts
  • khaki shorts or pants
  • boots
  • hats
  • utility vests

Then let the kids wear dinosaur costumes.

For a family with a baby or toddler, a plush dinosaur costume would be ridiculously cute.

This is also a really good last-minute option because you can probably build most of the adult outfits from things already in your closet.

Addams Family Costume

The Addams Family is another theme that almost comes pre-built for a family of four.

Wednesday Addams inspired costume with black dress white collar braids tights and Mary Jane shoes

You could do:

  • Morticia
  • Gomez
  • Wednesday
  • Pugsley

For a larger group, add:

  • Uncle Fester
  • Grandmama
  • Lurch
  • Cousin Itt

I also like that most of these costumes can be created from fairly simple black clothing and a few recognizable details.

Monsters, Inc. Family Costume

Monsters, Inc. is such a cute option for families with little kids.

The most recognizable characters include:

  • Sulley
  • Mike
  • Boo

For a fourth person, you could add another monster or one of the CDA workers.

This one is especially cute for a family with a toddler because Boo’s look is simple and instantly recognizable.

Family Halloween Costumes With a Baby

Some family Halloween costumes actually get even better when you have a tiny character to add to the group.

A few fun combinations are:

  • Cinderella: baby Gus Gus
  • Wizard of Oz: baby Toto or a flying monkey
  • Peter Pan: baby Lost Boy or crocodile
  • Zoo Animals: baby lion, tiger, or monkey
  • Monsters, Inc.: baby Boo
  • The Flintstones: Pebbles or Bamm-Bamm
  • Winnie the Pooh: Pooh or Piglet
  • Jurassic Park: baby dinosaur
  • Lord of the Rings: baby Hobbit
  • Super Mario: Toad

My biggest tip with baby costumes is to prioritize comfort over perfect accuracy.

If you can create the character using a soft onesie, pajamas, or normal clothing plus one recognizable accessory, everyone will probably have a much happier Halloween.

Family Halloween Costumes for 4

If you’re specifically looking for family of four Halloween costumes, these themes are especially easy to divide into four strong roles:

Cinderella family Halloween costume with Cinderella, Prince Charming, Fairy Godmother and baby mouse
  • Cinderella
  • Peter Pan
  • Wicked
  • Bluey
  • The Flintstones
  • Wizard of Oz
  • The Addams Family
  • The Incredibles
  • Scooby-Doo
  • Super Mario
  • Toy Story
  • Winnie the Pooh
  • Monsters, Inc.
  • Jurassic Park
  • Zookeepers and Animals

Some of them have exactly four obvious characters, while others give you enough options that every family member can pick the costume they like best.

Easy Family Halloween Costumes

Not every Halloween needs to involve four elaborate costumes.

Some of the easiest family costume ideas are the ones that start with normal clothing.

And if you need something to keep little hands busy before Halloween, I’ve got a whole collection of Halloween crafts for kids with easy ideas you can make together.

101 Dalmatians

Wear white clothing and add black felt spots. One adult can dress as Cruella if you want a more obvious focal point.

Where’s Waldo

All you really need are red-and-white striped shirts, jeans, glasses, and red hats.

Jurassic Park

Adults wear khaki and the kids dress as dinosaurs.

Zookeepers and Animals

Start with neutral clothes for the adults and animal costumes for the kids.

Winnie the Pooh

Use each character’s recognizable color palette and add simple ears.

Super Mario

Choose from Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, Bowser, and plenty of other characters depending on your family size.

DIY vs. Store-Bought Family Halloween Costumes

After doing family costumes for several years, I’ve decided my favorite approach is somewhere in the middle.

I usually don’t want to make four complete costumes from scratch, but I also love adding little details that make basic or store-bought pieces feel more special.

My sweet spot is:

store-bought base + things we already own + a few DIY accessories

That might mean buying a Cinderella dress but putting together the rest of the outfit yourself, using normal khakis for a zookeeper costume, or starting with basic blue and orange clothes for a Bluey-inspired family costume.

It keeps the costume manageable without taking away the fun.

Final Thoughts

Family Halloween costumes have become one of my favorite traditions, and I know there will probably come a year when my kids would much rather choose their own costumes than coordinate with us — so I’m soaking it up while they’ll still let me.

I hope these family Halloween costumes give you plenty of inspiration for your own crew this year. Whether you go all-out or throw something together from clothes you already own, the best part is getting everyone in on the fun.
