This DIY hand-painted mug and gift basket is the perfect, easy custom gift to give for the holidays! Who doesn't love coffee?_0001

I’ve been on such a roll with Christmas gift ideas lately. To be honest, I am a bit of a procrastinator (don’t tell!) but this year I’ve done a great job planning ahead and making lists of all my gift-receivees with ideas for each person.

One of Scott and I’s favorite Christmas traditions for the past six years (since we’ve been married!) has been to make handmade Christmas gifts for people. We hole ourselves up in my studio for a solid 3 days in early December and make our gifts while drinking Starbucks coffee and listening to Christmas records.

One thing we made was for my friend, Kelly (Kelly, if you are reading, please pretend to be surprised when you get this!). She and I have bonded over many a cup of coffee talking about literature and future dreams. So when it came time to figure out a gift for her I wanted to give her something reminiscent of our favorite times together—getting coffee at Starbucks! I had seen a few DIY custom mug tutorials floating around Pinterest and wanted to try my hand at my own idea.

You guys, making this mug was SUPER easy. All you need is an oil-based Sharpie marker and a blank mug.

I free-handed a heart by doing dots in the shape of one. I then worked outwards, adding dots with the gold marker all the way outwards from the heart. I made sure to leave about an inch clean at the top for food-safety since I wasn’t sure about the toxicity of oil paint (reviews are mixed). Lastly, I wrote Kelly’s name in cursive. To make sure your design sticks and doesn’t wash away, cure it in the oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

To make sure she had plenty of ways to relax and enjoy the holiday season, I made her a gift basket. I included a throw blanket and several calligraphy books since she had mentioned wanting to learn it. I also included several blends of Starbucks coffee—the dark roast K-cups for work days and the holiday blend for weekends and holiday mornings to use with her French press. I purchased the Starbucks coffee at the grocery store when I was there last week.

  1. WOW! What a simple and fun idea. We haven’t bought anything as grandparent’s gifts for Christmas yet, and I have been stressing out about it.
This would be an awesome thing for my kids to make for each set of grandparents, and each one would be unique.
Thanks for the great idea for the personalized mug. Love it!

  2. I love this so much. What a thoughtful gift for your friend. The whole basket is just beautiful. I’ve actually made mugs with oil based sharpie before and it works great. #client
