Out of all the Mother’s Day gift ideas out there, my favorite is the one thing mom really wants—time! Give your mom a fun Mother’s Day surprise by enjoying each other’s company and sipping some tea.

My mom and I used to do this allllll the time when I was younger- and now, I get to do it with Lily!

Not sure how to host a Mother’s Day tea party? Here are some helpful ideas and steps you can take to throw the best Sunday tea yet.

Mother’s Day Tea Party Ideas

One of my favorite Mother’s day party ideas is setting out and enjoying tea with my mother and daughter. It feels so fancy, so regal, so fun! I highly recommend doing this at least once.

I threw a traditional tea party and I’ll share some tips I learned with you below.

You can be as creative as you like and throw different kinds of tea parties. Do a theme – like an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ Mad Tea Party. Or, you can even host a Kentucky Derby tea party with fun hats!

There are so many possibilities when it comes to theme. I would recommend picking something you know your mom would love.

How To Host A Mother’s Day Tea Party

Here are my 5 essential tips for hosting your own fancy Mother’s Day tea party. Follow them and you’ll have a memorable party that you’ll want to repeat next year!

1. Break Out The Fine China

If there ever was a time for using the good china, this is it. Mom deserves it!

We got this particular set when we went to New Orleans 3 years ago.

Don’t be afraid to combine the fine china with your everyday items—in this case, the saucer and cup are sitting on top of our dinner plates.

Here is a closer look at the delicate china and how fancy it looks. You can’t even tell that it’s a regular dinner plate beneath it.

If you don’t have any fine china, you can mostly go buy some from a local flea market or thrift store nearby. Lots of people sell incomplete china sets for a pretty low price!

Don’t feel like you have to be restricted to using just white plates. You can use decorative plates too. Or, you can buy some white plates and paint them as a fun activity after having tea.

2. Consider Dietary Restrictions

As the host, it falls to you to make sure that everyone has something they can enjoy. I have gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan eaters in my family so it’s a bit more challenging for us, but there are so many options out there!

If you opt to buy snacks instead of bake, that’s totally fine—just take them out of the packaging for a fancier feel (like I did with these cookies).

You can serve just about any little finger food you want at your tea!

Here are a few of my favorite recipes:

Keep your mind open to other things you can serve at your tea. You don’t have to be stuck with just tea and muffins.

Here are some allergy-friendly finger foods you can serve with your tea.

  • Sliced Fruit
  • Allergy-Friendly Tea Sandwiches
  • Assorted Spread For Toast

If you are having trouble creating a menu for your tea party, ask around. Reach out to everyone that you’ll be sharing tea with what their favorite snacks are.

This is a celebration of all mothers, so the mothers should get to pick the food!

3. Don’t Forget Tea Essentials

Besides the tea and snacks, don’t forget:

  • Lemon Wedges
  • Cream/Milk
  • Sugar
  • Honey
  • Sweetener

While these are not all exactly “essential”, it adds a nice little touch to your table set up.

If you want to take even a step further, you can also print and hand out some personalized tea party invitations too! The invitations can say what type of dress wear is to be expected and what time the tea party starts.

The fun part about tea parties is trying different flavors of tea that you haven’t experienced before.

Buy a large variety of teas and set them out on the table so there’s something for everyone!

Make sure to protect your table and the lovely table runner from the heat of the teapot. I used a raised cake stand to hold my teapot, cream, and tea bags.

If you don’t have a cake stand, you can use a trivet or another protective heat pad.

Just make sure it’s pretty so it can blend in with the lovely decor of your table!

4. Add Fancy Decor

You’ll also want to decorate the table and the room to set the mood for your tea. I used a basic floral table runner with a white background for my table because it matches the dishes.

If you want, you can even cover your chairs with white fabric and hang up some DIY tissue paper flowers on the walls.

A pretty bouquet of fresh flowers will be perfect on the table too! If you can, put the flowers in a vintage vase so it can add more colors to your table.

Personalized place cards will add the perfect finishing touch. As you can see, I skipped that part, but I wish I had put some out.

5. Use Your Table Manners

Do you remember all the table manners your mother taught you as a child? This is the perfect time to bring them back out and use them.

Make sure you serve others (starting with the eldest) before you serve yourself.

You should also dress accordingly and ask others to do the same!

As the host, you should arrive earlier than your guests so you can greet them and begin serving them (if you are not hosting the tea in your home).

Don’t forget to keep the conversation upbeat and lighthearted. This is supposed to be a really fun time that you will all remember!

Avoid any hot topics that might cause someone to feel ashamed, defensive, or unhappy.

The last piece of advice I have left to offer: enjoy your mom!!!
