One of the really fun parts of not living in a construction zone is that we actually get to decorate for the holidays! We did a lot of work in our last house, and decorating for holidays was hard to do when we didn’t have walls or floors. Does that sound like a challenge? Yep, it sure was! 😁

So this year, we decided to take advantage and really make the most of this fun season. First up, Halloween, which also happens to be one of my favorite holidays to decorate for. Ready for some scary chic Halloween decor?

Living Room Halloween Decor

The very first area I want to show you is my living room. I love decorating it for each holiday, and Halloween is no exception. I’ll highlight a few different areas and the Halloween house decorations I used.

We only did the living room this year since we are still unpacking some other rooms in the house, and I didn’t really want anything scary in our room, haha!

Long Record Player

I chose to go simple for this area because the furniture piece is the main attraction.

Here’s what we came up with for our record player area.

Check out this antique birdcage! I had a lot of fun with it. When I placed the magnifying glass up to that bug, it really amplified the creepy factor.

I highly recommend using antique pieces as part of your Halloween house decorations. Their used exteriors have perfectly spooky Halloween vibes… who knows what these things have seen?

Living Room Halloween Decoration Ideas You Can Implement

Decorate With Bugs

Another really easy hack for Halloween decorating is to use bugs. I found a brass grasshopper and set it on a stack of plates. Then, I placed a glass cover on top.

The result is eerie, and I love it.

Dead Flowers

I took this tip straight from Adam’s Family. Instead of decorating with fresh flowers like I normally do, I just let them dry out and then placed the dried flowers as a centerpiece.

Since Halloween is a celebration of dead and creepy things, this just fits.

Black And White Candles

I love black and white striped candles because they remind me of witch’s tights. There are some available online and even sometimes in stores. If you see them, buy them!

If not, you can always make your own.

Black and white are the perfect colors to use in all of your Halloween decorations.

Decorate With Books

Books are the easiest DIY Halloween decorations. I literally just grabbed books with some Halloween-themed titles along the spine and set them on the chair. It doesn’t get any easier than that.

Scary Food And Drink Decor

To make the kinda scary food and drink decor, I used a carved coconut and put a knife into it. Then, I displayed some dark red wine (or is it grape juice?), grapes, and what appears to be some unknown meat.

This all encourages your imagination to go to some weird places!

Fireplace Halloween Decoration Ideas To Try

Decorating the fireplace has always been one of my favorite things to do! I love how all of this came together. Most of the finds are from thrift stores or World Market and Home Goods.

Note: if you don’t have a fireplace, these same fun ideas could work well in a dining room too.

DIY Wicked Pumpkins

Anyone can make these cute white pumpkins. I spelled out Wicked, but you spell out anything you want. If you don’t have a Cricut, you can paint them with stencils and black spray paint.

Witches Brew Drinks

If you are hosting a Halloween party, then you have to serve drinks in mason jars to your party guests. I love the poison skull and crossbones on the back. Use fun printables or stickers to make your jars extra festive.

Be sure to fill them with something red – they make perfect potion bottles.

Halloween Crates

For the fireplace, I just stacked a few things in some wooden crates that I decorated with witch-themed words and photos. Don’t forget to lay a straw broom in front. It looks like the witch left it there!

Salem-Themed Businesses

I picked a brewery and broom repair as my Halloween-themed businesses. I think they are perfect!

Creepy Skeleton “Friend”

Skeletons fit in with the rest of the decorating ideas here. Is this the skeleton of what used to be a black cat? Perhaps!

Ghost Decor

This looks like the ghost of Cousin Mary from Downton or something. She’s so stylish!

If you really want it to appear to float, then hang it up with clear fishing wire. She could also work on the front door or the front porch. Wouldn’t that scare trick or treaters?

Halloween Living Room Decor: Putting It All Together

When you look at the big picture of these Halloween decoration ideas, all of the small pieces fit together perfectly. I love that Poison sign on my mantle and the faux scarecrow on my door!

It really is pretty simple to decorate even a small living room for Halloween without looking kiddish. If you don’t love having tons of orange and black everywhere, try these creative ideas for your home.

I’m so proud of how this room was easily transformed. Nothing looks cheesy or childish – it’s my grown-up Halloween decor. Here are some final tips for applying this same idea to your home.

1. Less Is More

When it comes to decorating a home for any holiday, less is always more. I used the white space on my living room wall to my advantage. That wicker spider and web shape really stands out!

2. Add Spooky Decor To Furniture

I LOVE this chair—it was given to me for free at a flea market! But it kind of does look a bit haunting, especially when you drape a dress over the back and pair it with some spooky reads and very questionable food/drink choices.

A touch of faux Spanish moss just might take it over the top!

3. Halloween Decoration Ideas Don’t Have To Match

One fun thing about decorating for Halloween is that nothing has to really match. I love that!

I placed some broken antlers next to my chained book and an old bottle. It all just fits together anyway.

4. Leave Room On The Coffee Table

Another common mistake with decorating is to fill up every horizontal space with decorations. This leaves your room unusable – especially for a party. Instead, pick out your favorite pieces and save room for drinks and other ways you’ll use the coffee table.

5. Subtle Is Powerful

Details are so important when you decorate. That holds true with holidays – especially Halloween decor. There is nothing obviously creepy about the blue pillowcase below. But look closer, and you’ll see some bugs in the print.

These bugs match the other bugs that I used in my decorations around my living room.

6. Make Your Own DIY Halloween Decorations

Of course, we couldn’t leave out the super spooky books we made! The tutorial for both of them is right here. They are so easy that your kids can help you make them!

And if you don’t have room on your coffee table, they would make a terrific centerpiece on your dinner table!

I love how the splattered red watercolor paint looks like blood. It is perfect.

7. Halloween Wall Hangings

Keep an eye out at local thrift shops – you might find an old painting or portrait that is eerie and strange. The one below only fits in my living room during Halloween. Oh, it’s so creepy!

8. Spell Things With Wood Letters

I took wood letters and spelled out “Hell” just for fun. I love how it turned out.
