Every once in awhile, I find life gets into a steady pattern comprised of work, blog, eat, sleep, repeat. While stability is a good thing, I find myself getting a big stir-crazy and wanting to do something totally different and a bit off the wall. While selling everything I own and backpacking across the world isn’t a viable option for me (yet :P) I have found how to break out of a rut. Here’s how!

Take up a hobby. I’ve been teaching myself different watercolor techniques in the evenings when I have time. Lately, I’ve had to schedule out buckets of time to ensure I get my creative break. I recommend trying a hobby where you get to work with your hands and create something—the process is just so satisfying.
Try a new food: Are you the kind of person who goes to a restaurant, finds a dish they like and order it over and over? Me too. So lately I’ve started making a promise to myself that I’d start trying new foods. As a semi-picky eater, this can be a bit terrifying, but mostly totally delicious. Scott and I both felt a bit bored of our usual snacks, so when I had the opportunity to try the new Emerald cashews, I eagerly accepted.
You guys, these are so good. Cashews are my favorite nut by far and the nutologists (isn’t that a fun title!) over at Emerald nailed these new flavors. These big, bold flavors are just what I needed to break out of the snack rut! The flavors are:
Salt & Pepper- the classic combination of freshly-ground salt and pepper over a buttery cashew. Yes please.
Dill Pickle- this one has a tangy bite to it with a bit of garlic. It really does taste like a pickle!
Sriracha- yes, just like the sauce. This is a slightly spicy chili-flavored nut with tastes of garlic and vinegar.
Jalepeno- zesty! And very tasty with just a bite of jalepeno.
It’s so hard for me to pick a favorite but I’d have to go with Sriracha, which surprised me. I just couldn’t get enough of the spicy, tangy flavor.
I also love that they come in a variety of package sizing like 100 calorie packs I can slip in my purse or the larger-sized bags that are perfect for parties and at-home snacking.
Take a class. There’s nothing that will push your comfort zone line trying a new class. I’ve taken creative writing, art and literature classes and always leave feeling re-energized and really smart. 🙂
Travel. While you guys know I’m a huge fan of overseas visits, traveling doesn’t have to be done on a big budget. A few weekends ago Scott and I needed a time out from dishes and work and house projects, so we spent one night at a hotel in downtown Dallas (about 20 minutes from our house). We tried new restaurants, slept in and walked around the city. It was worth every penny, we came back excited with possibilities and totally refreshed.
Try a new workout. I got the cutest new bike for Christmas but it’s been a bit too cold to ride it very far. We had an amazing 75-degree day last weekend and some friends and I went for a bike ride around a lake. Just being able to feel the fresh breeze and get some sunlight did wonders for my mood, but of course being with friends is always the icing on the cake! Be a good friend and don’t forget to take a snack to share! 🙂
What about you guys? What’s your favorite way to add some zest into life and take a break from the boring and routine?
