Settling In Our New Home + Getting Ready for Baby

Conventional wisdom says it’s best to tackle one major life change at a time. As someone in the midst of not one, but TWO (or maybe even three!) huge changes, I have to agree! It wasn’t my exact plan to be moving, remodeling and unpacking our entire house (please see photo below for our kitchen ??) while being in the third trimester of my first pregnancy, but here we are! Even though it’s been a crazy ride, I wouldn’t change it for anything!

Moving...and remodeling! in the third trimester can be a bit tricky, but totally doable! Take time to get your home and finances in order while you're at it so you can settle in and enjoy maternity leave!

We’ve settled into a rhythm in our day-to-day life—work in the morning, late afternoons unpacking or remodeling and evenings split between working on the nursery and getting rest—this growing a human thing is no joke! I’m also trying to embrace the spirit of the season and enjoy decorating for my favorite holdiay—Christmas! On top of all that, we are working on some goals outside of all of this—like financial goals.

We’ve been saving for our retirement consistently and had saved up enough cash to remodel our new home, but with our daughter joining us this month (whaaat?!) we want to make sure we have plenty of extra cash on hand in short-term savings as well. I hear babies are expensive. 😉

Not only are we working on long-term and short-term savings goals, we also have decided to start saving for baby’s college fund when she’s born. We want to set her up for success in every way possible. I mentioned this before, but we recently opened a bank account with Frost Bank. I’m so happy with the ability Frost Bank has for us to view all our accounts at a glance—even though they are with several different financial institutions. So, less time remembering passwords…more time unpacking and organizing my book collection! 😛

I’ve only had to call Frost Bank one time and I was shocked at how fast someone actually answered the phone! I’m used to long hold times and multiple prompts from our former bank, and with life being so hectic, every minute counts. To me, Frost is holding true to it’s born and bred Texas roots, which puts this mama at ease and gives me more time for the important things—like decorating!

The nursery is slowly but surely coming together—I can’t wait to share the entire room with you all soon! I think my nesting instincts are starting to kick in, as I catch myself sorting and re-sorting laundry and tidying drawers.

So, here I am. Learning the new neighborhood, working hard to prepare lots of good blog posts so I can take maternity leave, obsessively decorating the nursery, budgeting and working on finances all while trying to take it easy somehow. 🙂 Phew!

What tips do you all have for settling into a new place…or getting ready for baby? I’d love to hear them!

  1. Oh well, my baby is fifteen years old, but it seems that you are doing everything right for your upcoming beautiful bundle of joy. Congrats. You look nice, I was so blown up all over my body when I was pregnant. Happy Holidays. By the way, your nursery, for what I can tell, looks fabulous.

  2. We tackled the remodel and baby all at once too…no sink, dishwasher or stove for the first 8 weeks she was here! Agh! Really ready to wrap it up now 🙂 she is 6 months old and our construction zone is not babyproof!
