Our New Living Room

The living room is easily the most lived-in room in our house. I’d say second place is the kitchen, and since the kitchen is completely open to the living room as well, really the living room is by far the most visible space at Gray Gables (I keep forgetting I named our house!). Recently I was tired of the old view and decided to switch it all up.

While I was out thrifting last weekend I found something I’ve been looking for for over  two years—a working record player! This vintage baby happens to be from the 1960s and is in almost perfect working condition. I snagged it up quick and we decided it would be perfect to use in lieu of our current tv stand.

What started as just one change ended up being a ton of changes—aka the Domino Decorating Effect. That seems to happen around here a lot. 🙂

We brought the player home and cleaned it out. When we got it there was an old tv at the bottom, which we immediately donated right back to the store before even checking out. 😉 We thought it’d be the perfect place to house the wicker basket that holds all our ugly tv electronics. We gave it a good cleaning and carried it to it’s new spot. BTW, that sucker is super heavy. Yikes!

Of course once that was in place, the old tv stand, which was really a coffee table had to be moved. We made it a coffee table once more and the coffee table we were moving got the boot into the sunroom.

We also added the rug that I recently moved out of our craft room, and decided to go ahead and move the sofa from catty-corner to centered once more.

Once we did that, the Persian rug and end chairs seemed too cramped. So we decided to clear out the fireplace area completely…and we liked it, so it’s staying empty-ish for now.

So here’s what it looked like before rearranging…and after!

I also picked up that cool side table at the thrift shop, isn’t it cute? The tray on top was a gift from my mom. I love it.

Jane (I introduced her on my instagram several weeks ago) found a permanent home on top of the record player along with some other fun items.

See the flowers there and on the coffee table? You guys, I arranged them with the help of a brilliant friend. DON’T WORRY. Come back Friday and learn how you can arrange them too…loads of gorgeous photos and super smart tips from my girl Kris.

  1. LOVE this living room! As I sit here in my living room I see some similarities in the setup… I may steal some of your ideas!!

  2. I’m loving the living room, the walls alone are such a massive change. I think the unit below the tv is my favourite. I’m really impressed that you’ll did that to it, I would have been so panic seeing a tv inside it I would have never thought to buy it. The vintage suitcases with the globe on them is so cute as well 🙂
