How to DIY: The Two Most Important Skills You Need

Over the past six years, Scott and I have done hundreds of DIY projects spread out through five different homes. While I don’t think that’s the course for everyone to take, I do strongly believe that every homeowner should have a basic set of skills in their toolbox, so to speak.

This post is a sponsored conversation on behalf of Lowe’s. As you all know, I’m a huge fan of Lowe’s and shop there often!

People always say to me, “I could never do all the projects you do!” but the truth is, I wouldn’t have thought I could do it either before I tried! I had never picked up a tool until I got married and we decided to do some updating. We were newlyweds who didn’t have a bunch of extra money, so we had no choice but to learn!

Out of all the DIY projects out there, there are two skills I think are the most useful, cost-effective and transformative, hands down: tile and paint.

I truly believe there is nothing else in the world that can transform an entire space like paint. I have lost track of how many walls we have painted at this point, but the quick answer is a bunch. And that’s not including the other projects I have painted, like outdoor concrete, brick fireplaces, and an old piano, to name a few!

Then there’s tile. Whether you are tiling a floor or a backsplash, knowing how to complete the task can help give you the space of your dreams. We’ve tiled many, many floors, kitchen backsplashes, bathroom accents and showers. Tile can make a huge statement, and it’s a totally doable project!

If you are a Dallas local (what’s up ya’ll!), then I have some exciting news for you! Lowe’s is hosting a free UpSkill Project Workshop where you can learn all the skills you need to tile and paint! Topics that will be covered include:

  • Painting and edging techniques
  • The differences between each type of sheen, and when it’s best to use each one
  • How to upcycle furniture with paint (see below…mint piano anyone?)
  • How to repair damages to a wall (handy with rambunctious kiddos or pets, trust me!)
  • How to cut tile and lay it on the floor or create a backsplash

The UpSkill Project will take place on April 7th, 2018 from 10am-1pm at Lowe’s in Dallas, located at 19210 Preston Road.

You’ll leave The UpSkill Project with all the skills you need to tackle your next painting or tile job! Did I mention it’s 100% free? Scott and I will be there and would love to meet you all!

And if you aren’t in Dallas and feel left out, don’t worry! The UpSkill Project is coming to a number of cities across the country throughout the year. Check the website to see if The UpSkill project will be heading your way! I’ll also be sharing a recap of what is taught at The UpSkill Project Workshop in a future post.

Tell me, what DIY projects have you tried to tackle (and how’d they go)?

  3. Woah!!! #TileGoals!

My husband and I are strongly considering purchasing our first home soon, and as newlyweds we certainly don’t have a ton of money in the bank! We were just talking this weekend about how we need to become a little bit more handy.

We will see you at the UpSkill workshop!

    1. Hi Morgan! SO exciting about house hunting! We bought our first as newlyweds too and we learned to DIY because we couldn’t afford what we wanted! Looking forward to seeing you!!

  4. I wish I was closer because I sure could use a workshop like this. How fun!! I don’t know why painting things makes me nervous. I’m scared I’ll mess up I guess. Want to come paint my dark RV walls? ?

    1. Okay, a RV makeover would maybe be the most fun project ever!! And the great thing is, the space is small so it wouldn’t take you long! I think you should definitely consider it. If you are in Dallas ever on your adventures, I’d love to help!

  5. My hubby is the king of DIY projects — me not so much! I wish you were doing this in Austin, I would love to learn how to upcycle furniture!

  6. That mint green piano ??

I seem to be going to Lowe’s every other week these days with our house project going on, wish I could make it to the upskill workshop!

    1. Isn’t that mint fun? It was such a blah piece before and now it’s the thing that everyone comments on when they come over—and all it took was a little bit of paint! 🙂 If you have a workshop in your area, check it out! And best of luck with your home projects.

  7. A neighbor recently stopped my husband in the street to ask if I’m an interior designer as she always admires our home. He said no, and that I just have good taste, and then we laughed and laughed because he is the creative genius behind all of our home renos. I am CLUELESS, and don’t participate whatsoever. But…I am secretly following along on your projects so that I can speak more intelligently about all of our future projects. Paint and tile? I can do this!

P.S. My husband basically lives at Lowes!

    1. That’s so funny! You and your hubby make a good team. 😉 Do you have a house tour on your blog? I just popped over there and didn’t see one but I’d love to check it out. 🙂 And yes, you CAN do it! Come to a workshop and learn, then surprise your husband with your newfound DIY skills!

  8. Aww man, too bad I’m not in Dallas anymore!! I would’ve so stopped by! Wish I had a house to practice some of these things on! It really is amazing how much experience y’all have racked up over the years! Love seeing all the before and after pics!!
