How to Choose Replacement Windows and Patio Doors

I firmly believe that when you purchase a home, upgrading your windows and doors is one of the best investments you can make. Not only will it add efficiency and energy savings by leaps and bounds, but it will also look so, so good. Trust me on this one—new windows are worth it!

Of course, windows are definitely an investment that can cost some serious cash. Like most things in life, you get what you pay for, so it’s worth taking the time to research and make sure you choose wisely. I’ve upgraded windows in multiple houses, so I have teamed up with my friends at Milgard Windows & Doors to share some tips to help you look for the best windows and patio doors possible.

Choose the window company wisely

I’ve made the mistake (and thus learned the hard way) of trying to cut corners, save a few dollars and hope things turn out okay in many remodeling projects. Almost always, this ends in a total disaster and costs me even more money to go back and fix (leaky toilet that ruined our floors and bad electrical work that burned a hole in our hallway are two examples that come to mind!). When it comes to your home, it’s worth investing in something of quality.

I am a big fan of Milgard Windows and Doors because they have quality products with decades of experience to lean on. They have been open and selling windows since the 1950s, and certainly have a legacy in the window and door niche.

They definitely stand behind their product as well with a Full Lifetime Warranty—so when you purchase through Milgard you don’t have to be afraid that your windows will be short-term.

Decide what features are a must-have

If you are in need of some beautiful replacement windows, you might be surprised at how many options and choices there actually are out there. Milgard has a wide variety of features to choose from, resulting in their different window lines. My favorite line is one of the vinyl windows called the Tuscany® Series.

Living in Texas, having a window that can withstand harsh weather conditions is number one on my list. It was literally 110 degrees here this week—for like 10 days straight! The Tuscany Series windows are vinyl and manufactured by Milgard themselves in-house with a proprietary vinyl compound. Bottom line—it means virtually no maintenance for you and ultimate protection for your home. Win/win.

I also love the Tuscany Series SmartTouch® Hardware. It allows you to open and close your window with one hand—with a baby I am definitely doing everything one-handed these days! It isn’t just parents who can benefit from the SmartTouch Hardware, however. It’s also great for seniors or those with arthritis—one quick motion and your windows are effortlessly up or down.

Since having Lily, safety has definitely been top of mind—and I know you other mamas feel the same! Us mama bears have to keep our kids safe—and I’m happy to say Milgard windows are one of the safest options on the market. The SmartTouch hardware makes it easy to see at a glance when the window is locked, and the glass adheres to some pretty tough safety standards.

Pick a window that fits in with your home’s style

Of course, being an interior design aficionado, I also need windows to blend in with my interior design style. Thankfully the Tuscany Series vinyl windows are totally gorgeous and customizable. The windows have even sightlines, which are a traditional look that will never go out of style.

The windows come in eleven different colors, all of which are coated for maximum longevity. Check out the three interior colors and 8 exterior color options here. Milgard also has multiple glass finishes to choose from. While I definitely recommend clear glass for most of a home, I really like the idea of this specialty glass for the bathroom.

Look for patio doors that are functional

If you want to infuse your home with extra natural light and plenty of style, think about upgrading your patio doors as well. I have a big goal to convert our covered patio into a functional mudroom and lounge space, and I am coveting this incredible glass wall big time.

I got to check it out in two different spaces, and it was nearly effortless to open at both. I could do it one-handed, which again seems to be my norm these days. I love the idea of being able to slide open my Moving Glass Wall System, and instantly doubling my space, especially when entertaining—just not when it’s 110 degrees out! Thankfully the doors are insulated and will keep your home comfortable, even in crazy weather.

At the end of the day, choosing windows and patio doors is a big investment and worth researching before making the leap. I’ve been so impressed with Milgard every step of the way, and would absolutely recommend them to any homeowner who wants to create a beautiful, safe and efficient environment for their family.
