Easy Valentine’s Day Decoration Idea

I have always loved crepe paper rolls (or as I lovingly call them party streamers). I’ve found them to be inexpensive and they come in a wide variety of colors.

I had been hearing about a crepe paper technique that involves sewing for quite a while, so when I had a Saturday afternoon free (VERY rare), I busted out my sewing machine for the first time in over a year (shhh) and gave it a try.

Spoiler alert… I loved how it turned out.

How to Make Decor With Crepe Paper Streamers

This is really quite simple. I’ll show you two different ways to make your own wall decor out of streamers- sew ruffled streamers and no-sew fringe method.

Here’s how to do it!

How To Sew Ruffled Streamers

To begin with, I selected three crepe paper rolls in fun Valentine’s Day colors (red, white and pink of course!).

To do the ruffling, I followed the instructions in this video to help guide through this DIY project.  Let me be honest with you guys… it wasn’t easy.

I snapped the thread multiple times, cursed a time or two and had an aching back by the time it was over but I’ll attribute a lot of that to being sorely out of practice.

Once I got a flow going through, things went a lot easier, but it was a rough start! By the way, if anyone is looking for a sewing machine, mine is really basic and inexpensive. I’ve been told it’s a great beginner’s machine, which is exactly what I need!

1. Gather Your Supplies

You will need a sewing machine and three rolls of streamers.

2. Sew The Streamers Together

This is the part where I got the most frustrated. If you are a beginner or just out of practice, give yourself plenty of time for this part.

What a cool way to use crepe paper to decorate for Valentine's Day! Totally doing this, they are like $1 each! Love!

As you can see, this made a TON of streamer! It ended up being really bulky and I used about 1/2 a crepe paper roll for each color. It was so fun-looking and fluffy by the time I was done.

3. Leave Some Thread At The End And Pull It Tight

This is what makes the ruffles. Isn’t it pretty?

I really enjoyed pulling out all the ruffled streamers I just made and rolling it up into a huge, thick roll. It is pretty surprising how much this makes.

This roll of streamers won’t fit in the same sized container as before. Be prepared and maybe have a larger basket or bin you can keep this in after Valentine’s Day is over.

How Do You Make Fringe Streamers Without Sewing?

But Tania,” you say. “I hate sewing. And/or I don’t have a sewing machine. What can I do?

Never fear, friend; I came up with another option just for you. You won’t get the same look as the ruffled streamers, but you know what’s almost as cool as ruffle?

Fringe. And it’s way easier to make too!

To make fringe streamers without sewing, you will need:

  • Streamers
  • Tape
  • Fringe Scissors

1. Tape Two Streamers Together

To start, take two streamers and tape the end together with a small piece of tape.

2. Fold the Streamers in Half

Then, fold the crepe streamer in half. I call this “hot dog style” of folding. You want a crease all the way down the middle of the streamers.

3. Cut The Streamers With the Fringe Scissors

Use scissors to cut fringes in the streamers. Be careful not to cut all the way through or you’ll cut your streamer into pieces! For me, this task was made immensely easier by using these fringe scissors– aren’t they cool?

To make no-sew fringe streamers, first tape the streamers together.

As you can see in the photos, I taped the streamers directly on top of each other.

You’ll be cutting the streamers with fringe scissors. So if you are afraid of them moving a lot on you then tape them to your table.

Crepe paper is beautiful, but it’s not very easy to work with.

Streamers folded in half with fringe scissors next to it.

Don’t forget to fold the streamers, like in the picture above. This is what gives it the fringe!

4. Peel the Streamers Open

After you’ve cut the fringe you can peel the streamers open. The little fringe pieces make the streamer stay together- kinda like holding hands!

Below you can see a comparison. On the right, you’ll notice I made this using one color but it didn’t turn out nearly as fun, so I recommend doing at least two!

How Do You Decorate With Streamers?

I have to admit, I am extra proud of my ruffled streamer. So, I decided to give it a fun spot in my crafting room.

Yes, I have a studio now! It’s huge and wonderful… except for the yellow paint! That is next on my to-do list. 😄But for now, I think of it as sunny and warm instead of so very yellow.

Display the Word Love Using Crepe Paper Streamers

I used a pencil to very lightly trace the word “love” in cursive on my wall and then used small thumbtacks to pin the streamers in place. It’s currently my favorite corner in the house! Dare I say it? I “LOVE” it.

Creative Valentine’s Day Decoration Ideas

Be creative! There are so many DIY craft projects you can put together with your ruffled or fringed streamers.

These are some of the other ideas I had:

  • Spell out any other words
  • Make the shape of a heart on the wall
  • Write out your monogram
  • Hang them from your curtains or around your window
  • Create crepe paper flowers
  • Hang them as the string under a balloon

Are you all doing anything special to decorate for Valentine’s Day? I’m taking advantage of all the pink and red and girly I can! If you decide to try out any of these ideas, please tag me on Instagram or Facebook. I would love to see them all!
