How to Spray Paint Terra Cotta Pots

For as long as I can remember  I have wanted a vegetable and herb garden in my back yard.  How cool would it be to make dinner with a fresh picked salad, or cook with herbs you have home grown on your very own? I think it would be amazing.  The problem is, I have grown- and killed- quite a few plants. 🙁  In our last house we built a raised vegetable garden and planted carrots, broccoli, squash, potatoes and herbs- and they started to bloom and grow…and then a flock (herd?) of baby rabbits dug them all up and ate them. They were so cute that it was almost okay…almost.

Then I had a basil plant that did really, really well in this giant pot and we had to get really creative with what we could use basil in (a lot!) since we had an over abundance.  Then I kind of forgot to water it. And he died. 🙁

So for take three of the veggie/herb garden I decided to take it slow and try a few potted simple things- and gave Scott equal responsibility with watering the plants.  (For the record in the last three weeks we have remembered to do it!)  When I went to the White Rock East Garden Tour with my mom, they had a plant sale at the end. She was generous enough to buy me several herb plants- chives and rosemary.  The lady running the sale was giving away free tomato plants- so I took 8 or so sad looking wilty tomato plants knowing I wouldn’t feel too guilty if they died.

I found the spot that got the most sunlight and put the tomatoes in some pots that the previous owners had left behind.  Like so-

I wanted to do something fun for the herbs and had a fun idea in mind- so the next time I was at Home Depot I spent $5 adding these 3 terra cotta pots to our cart.

I used some painters tape and twine to create some different patterns on each pot and sprayed them with the same gold spray paint I used when I made my DIY rustic letters.

I love how shiny and reflective the paint turned out!  Unfortunately the twine pot didn’t look good at all- so I ended up painting that entire pot gold…which turned out fine!

I then removed the painter’s tape from the other two pots and used some letter stamps I had in my craft supply to stamps words on each pot using either a gold or white ink pad.  One said “live”, the second “grow” and the third “prosper”.  Which I really, really hope they all do! 🙂

After a few days of dry time, I was finally able to put some potting dirt and the herbs into these golden bad boys.

Look how cute- and ALIVE- everything looks!

Can we just take a moment to appreciate and compare how much my tomatoes have grown?! If you notice in the first picture below the leaves are brown and wilted and the vines only come up to the second tier on the stand.

Now look at them! They are green and vibrant and al the way to the top (4th!!) tier!  Woo hooooo!

I am super excited…and so are my furry friends Bella and Boomer 🙂

Okay so maybe they didn’t care too much…but I sure am happy! 🙂 Anyone have any advice for me on how to continue to keep these tomatoes alive and growing? What about the herbs? I am all ears!!!
