Items That are Worth the Splurge

If you all have been reading around here for any amount of time you’ll know we’re pretty picky about what we spend our money on. We DIY 1) because we love it and 2) because it saves us a bunch of money. Since we try to make wise financial decisions, some things in life are worth paying a little bit extra for. I’ve teamed up with Frette.com today to share a few things that I think are worth splurging on.

Bedding– I’m pretty picky about our bedding. If I am going to be able to rest and sleep well, I need fabric that’s breathable (especially in Texas during the summer!) but not scratchy. I can’t stand itchy sheets and fabrics and neither can my super-sensitive skin. I’ve tried lower-end sheets and bedding a few times before and have gotten rashes due to the rough texture. Lately I’ve had my eye on these amazing bedding collection sets from Frette.com. Frette has been around for over 150 years and has a reputation as a luxury hotel linen provider. They also sell to individuals though—and I am saving my pennies up for a hotel-at-home bedding set of my very own.

Art Supplies– Even as a kid this is an area where I was a bit picky. When people tried to sell me on the lie that Rose Art crayons were the same as the Crayola, I couldn’t be fooled. While I don’t color with crayons (that much!) anymore, I now love to play with watercolors and calligraphy. I’ve tried a variety of supplies and I promise you—there’s a HUGE difference in quality that correlates with the price differences you find. A $1 paintbrush is not going to be as nice as a $10 one. The way they hold the paint, the shedding, the smoothness—all major differences. Same with paint—a high-end paint will have more pigment and be easier to blend. For me, those differences are worth the splurge.

Skin Care– Like I mentioned above, I have really sensitive skin that also happens to be dry, so I have to be extra careful with what I use on my face. I wrote an entire post about my favorite skin care items detailing exactly how I use them.

Ingredients–  We don’t always buy organic, but we make an effort to shop from the farmer’s market as much as we can. My parents have a small cow ranch, so our beef comes from 100% grass fed, hormone free sources and after tasting the difference and seeing how much better we felt by eating locally sourced foods, we’ve made a real effort to include more in our diet. To offset the cost of more expensive meat and eggs, we rarely buy processed food. This helps keep our diets—and budgets!—in line.

Technology– I wasn’t always one to splurge on computers, but after purchasing a cheap computer only to have it die within a year (along with all of my photos, writing and school work), I vowed I would never buy an inexpensive piece of technology again. Since I use my laptop, camera and iPhone daily, those are items that are worth saving up for IMHO. 🙂

Travel– I couldn’t leave this one off the list! In case you haven’t had a chance to look at our photos from our trip to London and Paris, check them out here, here and here. If you are somewhere and you may never get to go again…SPLURGE!!! 🙂 All the way.

So those are the main six things I splurge on! What about you guys? I love hearing about what people think are worth spending extra on.

  1. I agree- skincare is something I am very picky about. Those blankets on that bed also look divine. I’m ready for a nap! 🙂
