The Next Chapter
I have been wanting to talk about this for weeks now, but I wanted to wait until everything was official and for sure. Now that it is, I can share—I got a new job! 🙂 As I’ve shared before I have worked in the recruiting field for the past 7 years, with a break in between to run my own photography company. After coming to the realization that being a small business owner just wasn’t for me in this season of life, I took another recruiting role last November, all the while working on our house renovations and my favorite side project—this blog.
When I found out there wasn’t a permanent full time position available at the company I was with (I was contract, and fluctuated between part time and full time), I decided to look for a position elsewhere. The company I was with was really wonderful and supportive, and I transitioned smoothly to being unemployed and actively looking for a job…for a week.
When the national average to find a job hovers between 3-4 months, I know it sounds crazy to say but I had 3 job offers that week- two recruiting roles, and one writing position. This happened to me the last time I had actively interviewed- receiving three job offers with only a few hours to decide which to take. I’m definitely going to address how I received the offers, give some great job search tips and what to do in the event of multiple offers in some upcoming blogs, but for now I will leave it at I had three offers Friday morning and wasn’t sure which to take.
I was able to quickly knock out one because it was more administrative, which isn’t really my forte. I then had it down to two- writing, or recruiting.
I was drawn to both roles for different reasons. Recruiting is something I am good at. I enjoy it, it’s rewarding. It was a safe bet for my happiness and success. Writing however, is a love. I have written since I was a little girl, and being a writer has been the most consistent dream I’ve held. I love how words can express and convey emotions and describe the most incredible of items. I love the sounds of them, the flow, the crafting.
Then why wasn’t I immediately jumping on the opportunity to be a paid writer?
Simple: fear.
I was plagued with “what ifs”.
What if I took this job, and regretted it horribly months later? What if I couldn’t perform well? What if I was meant to be a recruiter, not a writer? And—most freighting—what if I did take this job and didn’t love to write anymore?
Our friend (and pastor!) John often says something that really resonates with me- if you aren’t sure what to do when you are making a decision, make the choice that requires the most faith- “because without faith it’s impossible to please God”. Between that wisdom, the encouragement and council of my husband and parents, and the peace and excitement in my heart- I took the writing position.
It’s crazy to say, but I am a paid writer at JCPenney now. I get paid to do something I love. Everyday I get to look at concepts and craft something. Super cool.
I’m here to say thank you…to you. It’s largely in part to this blog, and those of you who read it, that I was selected for this role. To the hundreds of you here reading daily…thank you. Honestly, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for reading- for your encouragements and comments and emails and facebook posts.
I don’t know what the future holds, but I do know that God is leading me down a new path. Which is super exciting.
