Easy Accent Wall – ORC Week 3

Hi friends! What a crazy week it’s been- can you believe it’s time for week THREE of the One Room Challenge? Our laundry room is seriously looking so much cooler, especially with what we did this week with an easy accent wall, check it out!

So last we left off we had gotten rid of the super icky brown and yellow laundry room we started with and transformed it into a lovely and airy white space. It already has made the biggest difference as far as creating a blank slate for us to work on, but if you know me at all you know I can’t leave things blank for long. This is the part of the challenge I am most excited about- getting to layer in and add color, texture and all the little pieces that really make a home.

When I started creating a plan for this room, I knew I wanted to make the wall with the window an easy accent wall. I thought about a lot of different options- paint, stenciling, etc, but in the end I kept going back to wallpaper since I love our wallpapered entryway so much. However, wallpaper is notoriously tricky to hang (I hired it out last time!) and we are really trying to do everything in this room on budget, so I needed something we could do the work on ourselves. I had a lightbulb moment and remembered my friends over at Wallternatives who helped me makeover our guest room in the last house.

If you aren’t familiar with them, they make stunning wall decals and wallpapers that are totally removable. Although we aren’t planning on removing ours (ever!), knowing that I could always reposition them if I messed up was a huge plus! They were kind enough to send me the most gorgeous pattern ever that I was totally swooning over, the Summit Bonnie Christine Removable Wallpaper. Isn’t it gorgeous?

You guys, it was so easy to install! Anyone can do this! Yes, you! We hung the first panel in the corner like so:

The most difficult part of hanging was when we got to the window. Scott stepped in to help while I took a break–I had a massive sinus infection + strep (and had just gotten my first ever butt shot for it- awkward!) and was feeling pretty miserable! Three cheers for my handy husband! 🙂

To cut the wallpaper to shape around the windows and the cabinets on the end, he used a blade (make sure it’s a sharp one!) to carefully trim the excess pieces.

Once we had finished the top row, we still had to go back and add some more wallpaper to the bottom. These pieces are a repetitive pattern that is extremely easy to line up and match, so it went pretty quickly. I stepped in and took over for a bit. You can tell from the back of my head I had been lying down earlier, attempting to breathe! 🙂

Again, we just used a blade to cut off the excess- we only did the top half of the wall since we have wainscoting on the bottom half.

Tada! Isn’t it seriously beautiful? It’s the most dreamy room in our house now! It’s already making me hate laundry less which is a major win! 😛

Forgive the whole in the ceiling, that’s where our light fixture was. We are in the midst of adding a new one, can’t wait to show you guys!

So next on our list is:

  • Curtains
  • New lighting
  • Seating/storage
  • Art
  • Making the floor tile look less hideous :O

I have a plan for everything except the tile…I don’t think re-tiling is an option. I’ve thought of everything from painting it to covering it with a rug—any suggestions? I’d love to hear them!

  1. For a room that small, vinyl planks (like laminate only more waterproof) probably wouldn’t cost a fortune and you can just lay them over the top of the existing tile.

  2. Removing a tile floor is a terrible thing to live through! The dust goes all over every portion of your house. I think the pretty new wallpaper works great with the neutral tile. Just look at the change you’ve made in that space already. It’s incredible!

We’d love for you to share your ORC at thoughts of Home on Thursday. 🙂

  3. Oh Tania, I think this room is looking so beautiful! That wallpaper is gorgeous and adds a touch of whimsy too.

What about vinyl self adhesive tiles? I used them in my bathroom redo. They are super inexpensive and very easy to install.

  4. I love the wallpaper and I really love that it is removable! So when you want to change your mind it won’t be that big of a hassle to take it down. That is always my biggest drawback to putting up wallpaper, is that when I change my mind it would be a pain to take down. Your room is coming along great!

    1. Yes, it’s the perfect solution to try out wallpaper and see if you like it or not! I have no intentions of ever taking this down, but it’s great for renters or people who change their minds a lot! 🙂
