Kitchen Remodel: Demoing The Kitchen

The current state of the kitchen is…non-existent. Where there used to be a kitchen, there is now nothing. It’s just a blank, empty slate, which, to be honest is both terrifying and fun! Scott and I had a lot of fun doing the demo—he let me have the first swing at it after I got to pick out my own sledgehammer…relationship goals, amiright? ?

Demoing a kitchen is a lot harder than it looks on TV, to be honest. Tile and drywall and cabinets are all pretty tough materials. It’s the best full body workout ever, though. EVERYTHING hurt.

Here’s a fun time-lapse video of part of the process!

Here’s where I got really smart, though. After we tore the wall open, and we were trying to figure out how to get rid of the granite, I had a brilliant idea…we could list the cabinets and granite on Craigslist and get someone to come demo it for us.

People doubted me…but it worked! A lovely pair of house flippers came to pick up the cabinets. They brought their own crew who carefully took everything apart and they hauled it off—cabinets, counters, appliances and all!

The best part? They paid us $250 to do it!! ?

Then, Scott and I hit a wall. Literally and emotionally. We are both busy with our businesses (him with real estate, me with the blog) and the thought of jackhammering out the tile floor and putting the kitchen all back together completely exhausted us both.

So, we decided to bring in some pros.

We hired a crew of great guys to come in and work for us. They are awesome (if you are in Dallas and looking for someone, email me and I’ll send you their info!)! They had all the flooring removed in less than a day. When Scott and I did that at our last house, it took us weeks.

In less than 3 days they had the rest of the kitchen entirely demoed out and re-dry walled.

And meanwhile, I get to do what I love best. Work on the design! It’s a win/win for everyone!

Next up? Tile! I am working on finding something that works with both the wood floors we have going up the stairs, and the laminate floors in the living room and piano room. It’s a bit of a challenge, but it’s going to be beautiful. 🙂

Right in here somewhere will be a sink. Now that we have opened the wall up, the kitchen is SO much brighter…we didn’t have a single window in there before!

Have you gotten to demo anything before? What are your best tips? Here’s an important safety tip for you…wear goggles. Yes, they are dorky. But yes, you actually need them. You don’t want tile chips flying in your eyes!

As always, here’s a before-before, before and current view! 😀
