Tips for Easy Holiday Decorating + GIVEAWAY

Since we’ll be headed out of town for Thanksgiving, we decided to get ahead on our Christmas decorating last week. Seasonal decorating can seem overwhelming and stressful, but I’ve got some great tips for easy holiday decorating that will allow you to fully enjoy the season and keep your sanity (and wallet!) in check. 🙂

This post has been sponsored by Air Wick. All opinions are my own.

  1.  Choose a theme. This year, I have been feeling the simplicity and joy of the season more than ever. I had a vision of a Rustic Christmas, complete with a flocked tree, flannel decor, a roaring fireplace and minimal ornaments. This gave me a great starting point as I shopped—I’d simply ask myself, “does this fit my theme?” if not, I put it back.
  2. Shop your own home. Something doesn’t have to have a Christmas tree or a red and green motif to be useful as holiday decor. Items like white plates, wooden trays and solid throws can be added in at any point of the year and fit the look you are going for.
  3. Layer in items. As much as I love all the cute holiday pillows I’m seeing everywhere I don’t have the budget to buy them all. I also think choosing one or two pillows as accents can stand out more and look more cohesive with your home, rather than splurging on an entire new set of pillows! I keep our home fairly neutral so that I can quickly and easily layer in new items that transform the entire look. If your looking for some inexpensive holiday items to layer in, try pillows, throws and art as a starting point.

  4. Appeal to the senses. Holiday decorating isn’t just about the eyes! It doesn’t feel like Christmas to me unless I have a holiday station on. I also always have a candle or scent going no matter what time of the year and now is no different! Candles add such warmth to a home, which is exactly what I was looking for this Christmas. My friends at Air Wick sent me their holiday collection to try and it smells so good! I tried out both the scented candles and the scented wax melts—it’s really hard to pick a favorite. I used the wax warmer with the Spiced Apple scent while we were getting our tree together and it made me feel like I was out in the woods chopping a fresh tree down!

  5. Enjoy the season. When it comes down to it, the holiday season is supposed to be about love, peace and joy. If something is too stressful, don’t do it! Light a candle, close your eyes and just relax.

  1. ahhh… there is nothing better than the smell of **Christmas** in the home!

P.S. – I stalk your blog every day! Have fun on your trip!

  2. Mix it up from year to year. I got so stuck in the routine of putting my decorations in the same place each year. This year I made myself relocate them and mix them with different items. It looks fresh and new this year without spending money.

  3. I try to use some items I already have around the house too. Like repurposing a basket. Or something as simple as a white candy dish filled with fall or holiday colored candies.

  4. I don’t really have any tips. Each year I do a new wreath that I make by searching the property for cool looking plants/leaves/acorns etc. I guess that would be my tip. There is so much beauty in nature and in wintertime we are not outside often, so it is fun (and festive) to bring some of the natural beauty into the home.

  5. I have a lot of planters around my house that hold beautiful flowers in the summer, but are bare soil in the late fall and winter. They’re just not pretty to look at, and cease being decorative around October. I love greenery, but live in Denver, so winter flowers are out. I found that most Christmas tree sellers have an abundance of evergreen branches that are cut off of trees and usually just thrown away… So I just ask an attendant if they have a stack I can grab, and I plop them into a waiting box in the back of my car. I generally tip the attendant (it’s the holidays, folks!) and if it’s a charity Christmas tree sale for a local organization, let’s say, I donate some money to them as well. Then I spend a few happy hours cutting branches, and creating evergreen planters around my home. Bonus points for adding holly with berries, or painting a few bare branches white and using them to highligh the evergreens. They stay green until after the holidays, even just stuck in dry dirt! It’s a win-win-win: Upcycling the branches, donating some money to your local community, and beautifying your home for (essentially) free. 🙂 Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!

  6. Love your #5 tip – if it’s too stressful, don’t do it — especially when it comes to decorating. I reach a point every year when I look at my remaining decorations and realize I don’t love some of them enough to put them up. Which means it is time for them to go to a new home! That means I weed out a little every year (and yes, I do have enough to do that! 🙂 ), which also means that if I find or make something new that I love, I have a space for it. Win/win! #totallyterrifictuesday
