Trendspotting: Oversized Art

large art trend intro

The last few years the interior design trend was all about the rise of gallery wall. A huge fan of the trend myself, I created a fun gallery wall design in our last home to help mask our black, boxy TV. It seems as though the gallery wall is no longer number one though. The new trend around? Large art.

Designers are ditching clusters of paintings for one large-scale piece of art. While I don’t think this is the end of the gallery wall, I think the upcoming focal art trend is a refreshing alternative for people who like a little more simplicity and uniformity, or who simply want to make a big visual impact.

My verdict? Love it! To me, it makes an entire home seem richer and classier. I also like the simplicity of it, especially if you find a piece you love. It also is a fun way to tie in some different colors to play off of in each room. That’s not to say I am ditching the gallery wall—I still like those too!

What do you guys think? Team gallery wall or focal art?

  1. i like a mix of both, gallery wall sometimes and one focal piece on other walls. i don’t like to have too many gallery walls going on so i like having one piece of ‘art’ on the opposite wall.

  2. aw you know i love me some gallery walls, but i think this oversized art trend is one that can be in multiple rooms of a house, whereas i feel like one or two gallery walls in a house is enough! 🙂

  3. Oh thank goodness!!! I have a huge original painting that is probably 8′ by 6′ that worked in my old modern house with 24′ ceilings…it doesn’t fit my 1930s farm house at all. Maybe I can sell it now!!!

  4. Definitely a place for both in my opinion!
I love a gallery wall or two but you can’t have those clusters of pictures everywhere, it would all be too much. IKEA have some fab huge poster type prints and I’m sure they have a clever way of hanging them too which would probably make this quite affordable. Or pinterest if full of DIY canvas ideas of course!

  5. I’m sitting on the fence here. I like both and think both have an equal appeal for me. I have been collecting things to make a gallery wall upstairs but I have also bought a large canvas with the intention on making a large statement piece – I am still trying to decide what to do with this, so thanks for the inspiration.

  6. I love them both! I love the statement and richness of a large piece of art, but I love the gallery wall o incorporate pictures of the family into my home. I would not want to do that on the large scale (it would definitely be too creepy for me).

  7. I totally agree. I’ve done my fair share of gallery walls, but as I simplify I long for the simplicity of one big gorgeous piece. I love your inspiration shots too!
