Our Secret Project with The Home Depot—Revealed!
Hi Guys!! So excited to be sharing this project with you today! 🙂 I’ve been secretly working on something that has transformed our dining room…we created a built-in bar!
Ever since our giant renovation in the front of the house, we built this nook into the dining room with the intention of going back and adding a custom cabinet. Two years later…we finally did it!
When The Home Depot approached me and asked me to be a part of their very first DIY Challenge I was SO excited. Of course! You guys know I shop there like every day. So when they explained the only stipulation to the challenge was we had to use plywood, Scott immediately suggested we make this cabinet.
Of course I had my doubts…building a cabinet sounded really hard. And it was. But thanks to the help of my parents and Scott—we did it. For the entire run down of how we the cabinet came together with more specifics, check out The Apron Blog from Home Depot here.
But while you are here—let’s look at some photos! So here is our cabinet! I love how complete it makes our dining room!
First—a trip down memory lane! Here’s what we started with:
We added a wall (with a nook) to create a large butler’s pantry on one side, and the formal dining on the other side. For a long time the nook housed a random assortment of things, that kind of worked, but not totally.
Here’s where we are at today. I LOVE IT.
We added the LED lights rather than a traditional pendant, just for fun. We also stuck with the open shelving theme in our house (I am obsessed).
But check it out you guys! My favorite feature of this cabinet is the doors. Aren’t they awesome?? We built them to be able to hold extra bottles/glassware.
Scott and I (and some friends!) have had a lot of fun hanging out in our dining room lately. It’s become a gathering place more than ever, and has given us another spot for serving snacks and drinks. Or feeding each other crackers on our date night. You know, whatever. 🙂
Ya’ll want to know what another one of my favorite parts is? The mood lighting. The LED lights we picked up from The Home Depot have 16 different colors of light, and you can lighten or dim each one. There’s also flash and strobe modes—we’ve been having way too much fun playing with it!
So now life is all party-party over here! Okay, well maybe not ALL…but we have had fun enjoying this space over the past week or so. 🙂

Very cool! And just the inspiration I need to build something in the areas next to our fireplace. One question – can you elaborate on the dowels and techniques used in adding the two inside walls?
Wonderful article Tania. It was the perfect approach for my project… with one exception. I decided to build a cabinet where the doors overlap the cabinet wall edges – more of a european style cabinet. The one issue I bumped into was that the european hinges I’ve found require at least a 5/8″ thick plywood door. So… in hindsight, I wish I had built this cabinet with at 5/8″ or 3/4″ thick plywood. Just something for others to be mindful of.
