Painting Over a Headboard & New Bedding

I heard once before that if you can only do two things to keep your house looking clean everyday, they should be to wipe down your kitchen sink and make your bed. I’ll admit it’s a lot easier for me to keep my sink clean since it’s in a more public space, than it is for me to make my bed daily. However, I truly believe that a good-looking bed can not only create a jumping board for a clean room, but will actually help you sleep better at night.
While I absolutely adore the look of fluffy duvets, they aren’t exactly practical here in Dallas right now. While we are grateful to have a working air conditioner there’s only so much our poor cooling system can do to combat the 100 degree plus weather we are currently “enjoying”. So when my poor sister came to stay with us and we offered 20 throw blankets to her instead of a duvet I can only hope she didn’t suffer or freeze too much. It took me a few days but I was finally able to pick a lighter-weight duvet that I thought would be perfect. I picked a white reversible one from JCPenney during a big sale they were having last weekend. I also grabbed a few new pillows as well as a white bed skirt for her bed too.
The throw blanket and decorative pillows are also from JCPenney’s Design by Conran collection (here and here)—have you all seen their house collection stuff? Super cute.
Even though my new friend David Bromstad suggests choosing paint color last when designing a room (after selecting the furniture and other big-ticket items), I didn’t design this room that way. I just knew in my heart of hearts I’d find a white, beautiful headboard to put white, lovely bedding on to lighten up the dark colored walls. And luckily, I was right. Well, sort of.
The headboard didn’t start as white. It was actually a dark wood tone when we picked it up from a local thrift store. I loved the shape though and thought it would look lovely with some white paint.
After giving it a cleaning, I started painting. I got lucky and found some flat “oops” paint at Home Depot for $8, and the color was exactly what I was hoping for—a warm, creamy white. Hooray! I did add a little plaster of paris to help the paint adhere easier, which seemed to work really well…and after 4 coats the headboard was transformed.
It was raining (really hard!) all day, so rather than paint outside I opted for a “painting picnic”. We just shoved a lot of stuff out of the way in our dining room so I could paint. It was really pleasant actually!
Doesn’t it look lovely in this room? We still have lots of work to do—curtains to hang, baseboard to install, bedside table to make, some wall pieces to hang along with a lot of other fun projects. But for now, let’s just admire the lovely ocean-inspired colors in this peaceful room. Sigh.
Nap anyone? I won’t tell my sister. 😉

So you created chalk paint. Don’t you just love winging it and making your own paints. I am always messing with cans and creating other hues.
