The Best Five Years of My Life

Five years ago today I stood up at an alter that I spent almost a year carefully selecting the décor for. In front of almost 300 friends and family members I pledged my life and my heart, whole-heartedly, for better or for worse to a man.

Our ceremony was a perfect mix of the two of us. We had a Persian ceremony that was full of symbolism and rich history. We had an “American” more standard ceremony where we couldn’t decide whether we wanted traditional vows or to make our own, so we just did both. Because why not?

There were such great moments that day. Scott, his eyes rimmed with tears, steadfast, kind, earnest and good. Me, stumbling through our vows giggling and beaming between blushes and mentally chanting remember this moment remember this moment remember this moment.

first kissWe had an open bar and a plated dinner that I got exactly one bite of. We had a wedding cake that apparently was amazing, but I was too busy dancing to get around to it outside of the one bite Scott fed me. The dance floor was constantly packed and I had never had more fun in my entire life.

I really didn’t think it would be possible for me to love Scott any more than that night—but I was wrong. Here we are, five years later, and I still blush around my husband. I still giggle when I see him. I still get butterflies in my tummy when I know he’ll be around soon. Love, love, love. I pray it doubles and triples and grows more every second. So far, so good. 🙂

In premarital counseling, Scott and I were encouraged to pick a motto for our marriage. Something that would be the basis and foundation for the rest of our lives. Our counselors laughed when we told them ours, but we were serious. It really has been the bedrock of our marriage. Are you ready for it? It’s deep.

Newlyweds for life.

Serious. Our goal was to never loose the spark we had as newlyweds. We never wanted to get “comfortable” and stop trying. Still to this day, people at restaurants ask us how long we’ve been married and are shocked when we say how long. #newlyweds4life ya’ll.

So to celebrate our five amazing years together, Scott and I are stealing away for a long weekend in the Hill Country of Texas and Austin (BTW if you have any suggestions on places to go please leave them here!). I’m excited to have a few days with my man to sip wine, laugh loud and dream big.

I can’t wait to see where the next five years take us! I adore you Scott!!!

  1. I love your motto! It’s too easy to get complacent. With that motto in mind, you remember to always work to keep that newlywed feel. Stopping by from the SITS Girls FB page.
