A Day on the Farm

A day at the farm (22 of 33)

You all know those “would you rather” questions? Some of them can be so gross (and hilarious!) but I feel like I can make a determination fairly easily as to which choice is the lesser of the two evils.  Scott and I are huge road trip fans and I have so many memories of us rolling down a highway at 1 am, air conditioner blasting, keeping each other awake by making up the craziest would-you-rathers for one another. Out of all the questions, there is always one that stumps us both- would you rather live in the city or the country?

That one is so hard. There are so many advantages and disadvantage to both. The answer we both came up with is “a plot of country land right in the middle of the city”. Hah. Well…luckily dream scenarios can happen! No, we aren’t moving to a giant plot of country land in the middle of Dallas (we are not yet kajillionaires…!) but we do happen to live about 10 minutes away from downtown Dallas and both of our families happen to own second properties that are both country-esque! I’ve written about my parent’s land before (that post is here) and Scott’s family just purchased a plot of land of their very own.

It’s close to a city, tucked behind a neighborhood. You get the feel of being in the country until you hop in the car and are 10 minutes away from a major mall, grocery stores and a Target (basically everything you need to survive and thrive!). They aren’t living on the land yet- they are doing a giant remodel first to make it liveable but that didn’t stop us from gathering there on Easter Day to plant a garden.

It was Scott’s mom’s idea and I loved it. I loved the symbolism of throwing seeds in the ground in faith that they will rise to new life. If nothing else, we had fun. After eating our Easter meal and before heading out to the farm, we first got to meet the farm’s first furry residents….baby ducks! I die! SO CUTE.

As you can see…I was quite smitten with them. Soon they will be big enough to live out on the lake that’s on the property. Eventually they will shed their yellow fuzz and turn white. I can’t wait to watch them grow. Somehow I think they will not let me hold them when they are wild and free. 🙁

After I tore myself away from the ducks, it was time to get to work. The entire family had a wonderful time working on the garden together- such a labor of love. The kids (our niece & nephew!) were the cutest and most enthusiastic gardeners of everyone.

Of course there were plenty of fun things for the kiddos to do as well- drive a lawnmower (safely!) and my personal favorite- picking wildflowers to give to me. I had quite the collection to take home by the end of the afternoon. Never gets old.

Scott and I took a quick break from the gardening activities and strolled around the property, hand in hand, daydreaming about the future. It was an overcast day but the Lord held the rain back for us so we could finish planting, walking, photographing and dreaming.

I hope you all had as wonderful of a weekend as we did. It was a perfect time of reflection, reconnection and appreciation of all the good God has done for us. I am so very thankful.

And one step closer to deciding- city or country? What about you guys? 🙂

  1. Thanks for posting such a wonderful summary of our Easter family project — have to confess, though that Ken was the one with the idea of planting garden for Easter celebration as a family. I was racking my brain as to something special we could do as a family and he suggested this — which was perfect for the day! Loved every minute of it and love all of you:)

  3. I’m totally in love with the country! We are on the hunt for our own country acreage, so I’d have to vote country over city. But I do like a decent grocery store within a reasonable drive too! =P Glad you’re doing awesome Tania.

    1. That’s awesome Chione! I can’t wait to hear about your new adventure. I’m truly greedy and want both! But even if you don’t have a decent grocery store you can grow your own produce and order everything else of Amazon? 🙂

  4. the writing in this post is as beautiful as insightful – such a fun read, but also getting me wishing i could ‘discover’ some secret land in the middle of minneapolis to have room for a garden and a yard and a creek and horses…

    1. I bet you could! There’s gotta be somewhere- at least a little plot of secret land for a tiny garden- some of them don’t need much room! I want horses real bad too!

    1. Thanks Rachel! We really enjoyed it and are glad we get to enjoy a bit of both worlds 🙂
