Our Favorite New (Old) Piece of Furniture
Whenever I get asked where I’m “from” or where I “grew up”, I always preface my response with something along the lines of “that’s a hard question to answer, but…”. Between the ages of born and Texas, my family moved around the world including New York, Mississippi, Virginia and even Iceland. Yes, Iceland. We weren’t military- just adventurous. For the last decade and some years though my family has been settled in a city near Fort Worth. Some of my favorite memories were built and fostered in that house. It was a happy house.
Now, however, my baby sister and I have “flown the nest” and my parents have decided it’s time to move. Nowhere far- in fact it will be closer to us, yay!- but still a move nonetheless. The entire house is now being packed and loaded away to storage while the house is getting ready to be put on the market. Scott and I were there a few weeks ago to spend the weekend helping and while we were there I happened to mention to my mother that their antique tea cart was my favorite piece of furniture in the house.
She promptly gave it to me.
Such is the kind-heartedness of my family. After swearing a million times I wouldn’t paint it or do anything else to alter it, and that I wouldn’t sell it on Craigslist or anything else to it, Scott helped me load it into the car and we brought it home.
Isn’t it lovely? I want to learn more about the age and where it was built, but it’s solid wood with beautiful details on the wheels, the drawer and the shelf insert. I just love it. We decided it made the most sense to live in our dining room. 🙂 We decided to use it to store our china pieces- both older vintage ones we’ve collected and our new tea set we picked up in New Orleans when we were there for Scott’s birthday.
I love it. I love that our dishes are no longer in boxes and strown about the house- they are right there, in the dining room, where we can quickly reach them and use them. I believe fine china is just as good on a random Wednesday as Thanksgiving. Why not?
I can imagine it now- friends gathered around the table, enjoying conversations and laughter. And lots of tea parties with my friends and family- with all my ladies. Whilst enjoying Pride and Prejudice and crumpets and tea and all other tea-appropriate things.
