Hallway Visual Timeline…With Instagram!
I never really thought of the hallway as a super exciting place. Just a place you see for 20 seconds or so every time you walk through the house, but nothing really to make a fuss about. Especially in a house like ours, with a narrow hallway that doesn’t really have much glamour or shape to it. But when I’d wake up blurry eyed and stumble down the hall, or when we’d have people over and be giving them a tour of the house, it seemed sad somehow to have a perfectly adept space with nothing at all going on in it.
So I decided to fix it. On the same day we painted our master bedroom and our studio Alabaster White (Sherwin Williams), we went ahead and painted the hallway’s ceiling and walls white as well. Compared to the dingy off-white that was there previously, everything suddenly seemed very new and fresh.
I also knew that I wanted to have photos in our hallway. Again, working with a small space I knew they would have to be smaller in size. That’s when it hit me…our hallway would be the perfect place for Instagram photos. Like…a bunch of them! Ya’ll already know I’m obsessed with Instagram (check mine out here!) so why not plaster them all over our hallway?
So after looking at several printing companies, I decided to order mine through Origrami. I chose to use their square print, and was super, super excited when they finally came!
Obviously I love the front of the photos, but the back is also super cute! They have a map with the location of where the photo was taken along with the caption and the number of likes. 🙂 Such a fun trip down memory lane!
To start my Instagram wall, I used a laser level to create a straight line on the wall. I used a pencil to lightly trace a dotted line along the wall to line up my first row. I selected the wall that’s directly to the right when you first enter the hallway since you can see it from the living room.
To hang my photos, I knew I wanted something that would hold my photos well, but wouldn’t be permanently adhesive so I could take them down or move them around. I was thinking of poster putty, but it was pretty hard to track down, so after poking around Home Depot I went with Command’s Poster Strips.
Hanging the photos was super easy. You’ll want to read the instructions and test it out on a nondescript place on your wall, but here’s how I hung ours:
You simply place your photo top side down, separate out one Command strip and peel off the red backing (it should say poster side). Press that side firmly on the center of your photo. Then, peel off the black backing (it should say wall side), line up your photo where you want it on the wall, and press firmly onto the wall. Tada!
It took me about an hour altogether to put my Instagram gallery up, but it went pretty quickly, and I loved looking through each photo as I was hanging them! After I had marked out the first line with the laser level, I eyeballed the remaining rows.
Altogether 72 beautiful memory-filled photos were hung. I plan on ordering more prints and continuing our visual timeline. Such a fun way to showcase snapshots of everyday life. 🙂 It makes me so happy to stare at the these photos- the hallway is no longer boring!
So now, when you look down the hallway, you see a colorful wall full of photographs rather than a beige blank wall. Love.
